Clunking Noise

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum.

I bought a new rav4 in 2008. From the very first day I can hear a knocking

or clunking noise from passenger front side when driving over speed bumps or

potholes, at speeds of 30 kmh or more. During this two years the problem is

not getting worse, but I would like to solve it while still in warranty.

I took the car to the service shop on several occasions, they can hear the sound

but can't find the cause.

Any ideas?

Zele.

There are 3 possible causes for steering knocks. The first is this which requires some very cheap plastic washers to be fitted to the suspension legs;

4.3 knocking from suspension strut.pdf

The second is this which merely requires the rack bolts to be tightened;

4.3 steering knock from loose bolts.pdf

.......and the last is this which is the intermediate shaft at the bottom of the steering column. This would be the most expensive.

Print them out and take them to your dealer.

Good luck and let us know the results :thumbsup:

Had same prob on 4.2 turned out to be anti roll bar bush - don't know if it is the same set up on the 4.3 though.

No - quite different :thumbsup:

Thanks for replies.

@anchorman:

The noise can be heard while driving in straight line over

speed bumps, not during turning of the steering wheel.

The noise is slightly 'metal' and asymmetric, from front right side only

(passenger side on the continent).

Last time I was at the service shop, they told me that they test drove

some other ravs, and that they all produce such noise. Can that be truth?

Zele.

No. It should not make any knocking noises. Ask them to show you one that does it.
