Possible New Farm Workhorse/4X4

My brother may be looking to purchase a new (to him) 4 wheel drive for use in

his farming business. I was just wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions

on what would be a decent machine to get.

The criteria

age - approximately 2001 to 2003

Be capable of being used for farming activities (off road, driving in fields etc)

for 2 to 3 years at least (hopefully) without breaking too much.

Be capable of towing occasionally (up to roughly 1500 kg)

Dual range gears would be good - and while im being fussy - if we got the right

one it would be useful to use it as a car also.

Current thinking is perhaps a Grand Vitara as it would seem to meet most of the above requirements.

Would appreciate any input you can offer - thanks a million and happy new year

to you all

Thanking you

I'd think along the lines of a Hilux or surf maybe.. or a landcruiser?

The Vitara won't pull 1500kgs.

Commonly one would look at the landrover but road use isn't that comfortable.

You have the need for a four wheel drive, with sufficient weight to be able to drag a trailer on softer ground, using mud type tyres. Whatever you get will be a compromise between road and field. Owning a landrover for 3 years, I'd go for the Toyota option.

Oh we had a Grand Vitara years ago. Don't bother 'cause they um, "crumple."

We also had A Landrover Defender. It was terrible.

We ALSO has a Landrover Freelander. Utterly useless 4x4.

And now we got the import Toyota Surf. 3.0 Diesel. Tow's no problem and even though it's an auto gearbox, there's nowt wrong with it for off roading. It's been a godsend with all this bad weather we've had.

Haha priceless question, asking about choosing a 4wd on a Toyota forum and suggesting a Suzuki yourself :toast:

Just have a look on any farm and see what they use, without question it will be a Hilux, L200, Ford Ranger or some sort of Landrover. The best mix of off road and road use is a Hilux, of course ask the same question on different forum and the answer will pretty much be biased towards that make

Kingo
