Stalling Problem

Hi all, ive got a 52 plate yaris diesel and ive been having an intermittent problem, sometimes when i try to pull away the engine just seems to die on me and i lose power, the engine management light comes on and usually i have to turn the engine off for 10-30 seconds and then restart after which it will be ok for a while again. I did about 40mls yesterday and it did it 3 times but other days its fine. Its been in the garage and had the fault code read which if i remember correctly it came up as a fuel pump fault. The garage changed the fuel filter and it was fine for approx 2-3 months but has started again now. Anybody had the same problem? The car seems to run fine the rest of the time and gives good economy, the problem is just when pulling away in first, it feels as tho im stalling by not having enough revs on is probably the best way to describe it.

I have exactly the same problem with my 2004 diesel yaris. It has become much worse over the last few days. 14 times yesterday on a 25 mile journey - now I am terrified to drive it. Over the last few years I have had the fuel filter changed a good few times, poured Forte in the tank and directly in the filter which usually helps for a short period. I have genuine Toyota filter in the car and my engine warning light comes and goes. After a stall it always comes on but then after a few days disappears. The black excess carbon mentioned on the forum has also been cleared. I have little faith in Toyota as they are very vague regarding a solution. It is the 'engine management' or maybe the 'fuel management' but the only recommendation that they have made is a new fuel pump. This was four years and 50000 miles ago........ I still have the original pump as I didn't think this was the problem. I could have spent a fortune on the pump and still had this problem. Would anyone suggest replacing the MAF? I have read that a faulty MAF can cause 'cutting out' when going round a roundabout or up a hill. I would be willing to replace this if someone out there has had my problem and this has solved it.

Very frustrating as the car might now do another 500 or 5000 miles without a problem. I would be very grateful for any advice.

Try cleaning the MAF with some CRC cleaner(Can be bought off eBay for £10) or electrical contact cleaner (Which is cheaper) and rather than using Forte (Which is a good product) use BG244 in the fuel and see how you get on. What brand of fuel are you using?

hello mate

your problem must be with EGR valve due to blocked by carbon deposits inside -- so have it inspected.

Cheers/Igor

I use any supermarket fuel. Usually ASDA or Sainsbury. I use the standard diesel. Just fill it up when it needs it rather than using the same petrol station or fuel type. I will be looking at CRC cleaner on eBay as you suggest. I will keep updating this forum with how I get on as there seems to be so many people with similar problems. Thank you for your advice.

You're welcome Caroline. Hope all goes well and plz lets us know how you've got on. Try to avoid the supermarket stuff and go for Shell/Esso fuels. If you go to a Shell station and register with there V-Power club you get money off vouchers on fuel just like Tesco's ect. You'll find that even though fuels like V-Power cost more at the pump! you get more miles per gallon so its roughly the same at the end of the day. Plus you are using a far better fuel for your engine as it has twice the detergent and additive packs as "Normal" fuel.

If you dont want to Shell out! (Pardon the pun  ) for V-Power, there fuel saver fuel is also very good.

Have had the Yaris at a local garage and it conveniently stalled 4 times while the mechanic had the lap top connected. The fault is showing as a problem with the 'fuel rail pressure control valve'. Apparently it should be around 45 and when it stalls it shows as nil. To replace with Toyota part is just under £400. Has anyone else tried replacing this part to fix the dreader D4D cutting out problem? If I thought this would do the trick I would buy the part but looking for reassurance or advice.

I've not had experience with the problem. But £400 is quite a lot of dosh! Have you taken a search on eBay for one? Or mabe a breakers yard? Just a thought

We have had a look on eBay and bought it second hand for £50. Fingers crossed that this will be the solution. I will keep updating forum as there appears to be so many people with this D4D problem.

Fitted the 'new' fuel rail eBay buy but unfortunately the car has cut out since. The computer is now showing the code P1229. I see from this site that this code is a fuel pump / fuel problem. I am really not keen on a trip to Toyota as they recommended a replacement pump years in 2006 (approx 50000) miles ago. I decided against that then and the car obviously did not need a new pump as it has managed without for all this time. The car is probably only worth £2500 so spending hundreds on a pump would only be worth it if Toyota could guarantee that this would fix the stalling / cutting out problem. I doubt that they would be able to guarantee this and I can easily imagine having a new pump on my old car with exactly the same problem. Has anyone had the P1229 code and my stalling issue? If so, did they replace the pump? Hoping for advice.

Diesel specialist to check it out.

Otherwise you will end up spending lots of money replacing bits...

Unless it's obvious - or very simple - debugging problems require an expert. One USED to solving them - daily.

(and I don't mean a Toyota dealer necessarily - most Yaris diesels are so reliable..they rarely have to debug one. Find a garage which specialises in diesel problems. An Internet search round your location usually finds something)

Hello caroline did you manage to sort this?

I have the same issue. changed the fuel filter but no good. keeps cutting out at low speeds with fault code p1229?

could it be the fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator or something else?

Caroline4471 last visited the club in 2011 - so you're unlikely to receive a reply
