hi, can anyone help with suggestions to what the noises could be from my poor old 1994 auto rav 4. when the engine is under load there is not much noise except in low gears - like a thump thump thump til it speeds up to about 30mph then when it backs off and slows down the noises are quite loud knocking etc. I know it could be transmission but not really sure. any ideas. done about 176k km (jap import so all is in km) and want to sell it soon but need to have answers about noise. many thanks!!!

Start by checking all the drive shafts and couplings.

You need to check for wear at the centre prop bearing just underneath the front floor pans. Then check the rear diff mount - its a rubber thing that can get sloppy and allow the diff to rock or swivel on power on and power off situations. I'd tend to guess the centre bearing may be either loose or worn.

If you discount these, have a check at the driveshafts etc as ancs says. At that mileage the suspension bushes are worn as well.
