07 Avensis Hesitation Whilst Accelerating

Hi All,

2007 Avensis 2.0 D4D Estate

Following on from my successful EGR valve clean last week (Thanks chaps), the car is driving badly (still).

When accelerating steadily the car is hesitant / lumpy up to 2krpm.

From the forums I get the impression it is 'likely' to be the fuel filter (now that EGR is ruled out).

I've found destructions here :-

but the images for the location have gone. :-(

Where is it located?

Thanks Guys,

Gordon

Presuming that you have already bought the fuel filter, if that doesn't fix it once fitted I would recommend a professional diagnosis. Can save lots of time and money.

Hi Gordon.

Your problem might also be dodgey diesel. I had the same trouble with my 03 D4D. I go to reputable filling stations now and have never had the same problem since.

Hi Mloc

Funny you mention it, I was musing about it, and im sure it didn't have this symptom before, so was thinking what else changed... Fuel Additive after the EGR valve clean... In my petrol days I've only ever used Redex with great success, but for whatever reason this time I went for a different brand that escapes me.

So I'm holding off on the filter change, at least until the next tank of fuel (back end of this coming week). If it is ok with the next tank I'll find out what the Fuel additive was and post here. It could also of been a tank of dodgey fuel, but that might be too much of a coincidence.

Thanks for your thoughts on this

Gordon

I presume you reset the ECU when you cleaned your EGR valve so it could learn from a correct set of values.

I presume you reset the ECU when you cleaned your EGR valve so it could learn from a correct set of values.

I cleared the codes, I didn't see an option to reset anything else from the tool I was using.

After the EGR Clean I did take it for a bit of a spank, which included 15min @ 2500rpm (constant ish). Since the EGR clean the car has done about 120miles

If I haven't reset the correct part of the ECU either by clearing the codes or my post clean run, would it not of learnt in 120miles?

Thanks,

Gordon

When I cleaned my EGR valve, I had to take out a few of the fuses to reset the ECU so it could re-learn correctly - I suspect you havnt done this (please dont ask me which fuses to take out of the fusebox but there were 2 that you had to remove from memory

Removed the ECU Fuse. First run out car felt fine, but on the return back to its old tricks.

Thought as I'd used the old gaskets again after the EGR clean could be I'd not ensured the surfaces were clean enough when I put the EGR back on. Whipped the EGR off again cleaned all surfaces then used fresh gaskets.

Then just incase I hadn't pulled the right fuse for the ECU, I disconnected the Battery.

Again first run out car felt fine, return back to its old tricks.

(Both journeys were 5-6 miles 30min stop then return.) I'm guessing that after the ECU reset the ECU runs on defualts and it is ok. the second time it is started it has data and it starts to go funky... :-(

I no longer think it is fuel related, the lumpyness / hesitation feels like something being turned on off. it starts @1200rpm. I think I can feel in higher gears and that it must be the gear ratio means it is no where near as prominent..

Any ideas?

Thanks Gordon

(mloc, ran the tank nearly dry then used filled at a different station. No joy :-( )

Worth considering getting a professional to look at it. Long distance/internet diagnosis is not the most reliable way to solve things. If you don't want to use a Toyota dealer to diagnose it (why not?) then hunt out a guy who specialises in Toyotas.

Hi Druid boy,

Over the years I've tried all the local garages. Cheap to expensive. Performance has at best been poor, at worst down right dangerous.

i have been in a lucky position where I don't need my car day to day. Previously my cars have been on axle stands whilst I've overhauled suspension / running gear. So keen to learn, and happy to diy after my experiences. It is worth noting that I have an engineering background.

Having said that I haven't given my local Mr T garage a try based, and probably will if it drags on. So far I'm only out of pocket a fuel filter.

Thank you for your recommendation

Gordon

When you say that it is hesitant and lumpy up to 2krpm, do you then get a sudden acceleration after 2krpm? I have that on my car and 2k is when the turbo charger kicks in. Don't know whether this is similar to what you have.

Hi All,

Just had a diagnostic outing with a friend who knows his TurboDs, using an bluetooth ELM327 Clone from eBay and the Torque OBD App for android

MAF looks good.

Turbo is engaging correctly.

Manifold pressure is very low even when turbo is engaged.

Opening the window you can hear a bit of a whistle (Not like turbo whine).

Suggesting that there is a split hose or a poor push fit connection and the boost from the turbo is just getting lost. Or worst case the inter cooler is knackered :-(

Next step it to get it on the ramp and see if I can see / hear where the boost pressure is going.

A quick google hasn't thrown up any common faults, but I might not be using the correct parameters, Anybody here has any experience with loss of boost?

Thanks Gordon

(Matt, thanks for your post)

All sorted,

The hose from the inter-cooler to the manifold had slipped and the Jubilee clip was no longer holding it in place.

Removed the coolant reservoir for access and tightened everything up.

IMAG0094.jpg

On a bit of a blat out I logged 19.5psi peak pressure at the manifold according to the ECU. Didn't manage to log what the standard boost was. But all fixed.

Thanks for all your advice.

Gordon
