Had a call from Mr T today to say my Prius should be ready 10 days earlier than anticipated when the order was placed in February!

Quite surprising considering the recent problems in Japan, the car being factory built due to the Safety Pack!

Needless to say it made my day! :D

I think the sailing time is approximately six to eight weeks, it varies so much because the weather and sea conditions (dead calm, stormy...) can vary so much. I think the ship with your car must have left before the disaster in Japan. It's lucky your ship sailed when it did...

The latest delivery date is the 10th of May rather than the 20th so slightly over a month to go.

I don't think it will drag though. I seemed to have reached that age where weeks fly by incrediby quickly!

Encouraging news, given that I ordered the same car in the same spec at the same time!

Safety packs and other "optional extras" are fitted to the basic vehicles at a small "factory production Line" based at the UK port of entry.......The option packs are shipped across in crates with the basic cars.

My dealer tells me that years ago the options were "dealer fitted" but Toyota found that setting up a small fitting unit at port of entry was more economical and gave better quality fitting as those employed were fully trained to fit just those items!

I ordered our new Prius Gen 3 with leather. The salesman said the leather was done in Japan. I thought it was done at the port of entry as Yaris pointed out. Where ever it was done it looks good.

Not so. The safety pack is factory fit in Japan during manufacture hence the extended delivery. My dealer was quite specific about that having checked it in front of me when ordering the car on Toyotas intranet. I could have has a lower model Prius in a couple of weeks but the T-Spirit with Safety was 18 weeks from Japan's factory versus 16 weeks without the safety pack!

I dare say several simple option packs may be fitted in the UK but since the safety pack includes special glass and active cruise control, its highly unlikely these would be fitted in the uk after the car is built anyway. Also it would explain why safety packs cannot be retro fitted to existing cars already sold and on uk roads which they would be if there was an after build kit available.

Also, why turn down the chance to sell a £3,000 option pack if existing customers having bought their Prius before it was available want it? It doesn't sound very logical unless the pack is factory fitted in Japan in which case the lack of an after sales kit & fitting option makes more sense.

I bow to your "superior" knowledge ;)

I had not appreciated the complexity of the "Safety Pack" on the Prius.........Of course it makes sense to incorporate it at build.

I do, however stand by my statement that the "lesser" option packs are fitted at a port of entry "Mini Production line" because that makes more economic sense to Toyota

CBC is correct, and this has been much discussed in an earlier thread.

One of the reasons people are spec-ing the Safety Pack is that you get the higher quality factory-fitted leather interior, rather than the aftermarket leather otherwise fitted at the dockside to UK cars.

Not really any superior knowledge on my part, just info presented to me by Becky, the Sales Manager at my local Toyota dealership. She is really nice with no male ego to inflate so I am inclined to trust the information she gives me.

No doubt the lesser option packs are indeed fitted in the uk. It makes sense and I think those are available as after sales options too. :)

Quite a few of the options are fitted here, including leather!

Some are done on the production line and I think the safety pack is one of them

As mentioned above, the "lesser" models are done in Portbury

The leather in the safety pack is factory fit with the safety pack as far as we can tell. The leather front seats with the safety pack are heated too which the leather fitted in the uk does not include.

With lesser models however, it makes more sense to fit cloth because most sales are probably cloth anyway so build them like that and retro fit the leather at the dock later for the percentage of customers that want it.

Its all about organising production throughput efficiently and cost effectively I would think.

I dare say it is if ordered with a safety pack, it is NOT when ordered as say T Spirit with leather, T4 with leather etc

Absolutely but then we can buy a T-Spirit with cloth so it makes sense I guess to fit cloth as standard then retro fit the leather in the uk.

It must be a minefield trying to organise all these options in each country when you think about it!

Never mind trying to organise it, try sorting out repairs, trims etc when the car is 7 years old and you are not sure where the leather came from, nightmare!!

Safety Pack = factory fitted OEM leather with heated seats

Any other UK spec = dockside fitted aftermarket leather

No, no news one way or the other on mine.

However, my fleet department is now advising that Toyota have extended the lead times on all new Prius orders to 20 weeks, with an additional 5 weeks if any of solar roof, LED pack, Style Pack or Safety Pack are specified.

What impact, if any, this has had on orders already in the system I don't know.
