02 T-Sport Engine Blown

Hi folks.

Last week my 2002 T-Sport blew its engine while driving normally in a line of traffic. Looks like the con rod has snapped and punched a hole in the block (had to go walking back up the road picking up all the bits of engine). 81k miles and a good service history up until 2007 where the stamps stop but there are receipts for servicing etc until the garage I bought it off 8 months ago got it. As soon as I got it off them however I serviced it myself, including changing the oil/filter (had been checking it weekly since, always good level) etc as well as brakes and a few other bits and bobs which makes it worse that it happened. What I am wondering is, is there any recource I have for this? I called Toyota but they have said at that age it is unlikley they can help. I am devistated this has happened as I only got this because I knew Toyota cars are "reliable" and I was tired of having older cars that would break all the time so got a loan to buy a "good" car. This loan is still outstanding and I have no cash for a decent replacement.

I have lost a bit of faith in Toyota now, might be time to go back to Honda. This will be up for sale soon, not sure how much value there is for a t-sport with a blown engine though, advice there would also be much appreciated.

Cheers

Ash

Hi Ash,

Hard luck with the blown engine!! I too drive a Corolla T Sport mine being a 2003 with 131k miles and a full UK service history. I also took out a considerable loan to buy this car and I am not overly impressed with its performance to date. I check the oil and fluids twice weekly and have had it serviced with Toyota here in Ireland once since December when I bought it, however the engine has developed a bad rattle on idling all of a sudden which came as a bit of a shock as the car seemed perfect from the start and has never been driven hard by me. I just feel that in terms of reliability it doesnt match up to my old 94 Corolla GXi which I think shall be coming back out of my garage and onto the road again quite soon!! Let me know if you get any more feedback from Toyota or elsewhere as Im starting to think there may be some sort of underlying problem with the 2zz-ge engine.

Cheers

Rob

70K miles and our CTS is tight as a drum, never had any issues with the stuff Toyota fitted, it's all been what we have done. I find them to be excellent cars which tick pretty well every box.

You two are both just stupidly unlucky to have these issues as the E12 Corolla is just a Bullet-Proof car in general.

It is a shame your having troubles with your cars and i hope you's get it sorted.

Only heard of a few engines going on the rolla's thats nothing compared to tge amount that would have been sold so doubt there is a major underlying problem.

i'd echo the sentiments expressed by others, i think you guys have been very unlucky sadly to have problems. the e12 is bulletproof in general, irrespective of the engine or model. as an example guy down the road from me has 2.0d4d in light blue colour, last time i had a chat with him it had over 150k on the clock, no issues whatsoever.

depending on your local dealer they'll either be reasonable or total c*cks. my local dealer are usually very reasonable speak to them see if they can do anything for you at all. in the very least they should be interested in taking that engine off your hands to find out why it did what it did. last time around my toyota genuine discs warped they changed them for me but requested the warped discs back off me the guy said they'd send them to the toyota r&d place...
