Fuel Economy

I've noticed in my short time on this forum that fuel economy is a recurring subject, so I've decided to go for a bit of a drive to check out what a 2011 RAV4 2.2 diesel with a 6 speed manual box actually does mpg wise, to get a representative average I guess I'll need a goodly distance, different terrain and temperatures, so

About midnight tonight I'm leaving home and driving via Murcia, Albacete, Madrid and Burgos to Santander (the place not the Bank) to catch a ferry to Portsmouth arriving about 15.00 hrs on Tuesday, as long as the !Removed! thing doesn't sink of course, from there to Hertfordshire for a pint or several in the RNA with a few mates, then on to Scotchland for a week via The Peoples Republic of Geordieland

The return journey (with management aboard) will be Ayr to Portsmouth (for another night of revelry in Pompey) followed by a trip on that waterjet propelled oddity to Caen in That France (not looking forward to that bit) and onward at management's direction) to home in sunny Spain. I have suggested visiting the U Boat pens at St Nazaire but management is not keen on a load of concrete, and I don't dare mention that I fancy visiting Sir Norman Foster's piece of architectural brilliance at Millau coz if she knew she'd been over a bridge that was 1100 feet above the valley floor I'd be cleaning the passenger seat on the RAV :crybaby:

Anyway, best part of 7000kms should provide some useful fuel economy data, the tank is full of Repsols finest and I'll fill up before leaving Spain as I'm thinking fuel in the UK is a bit expensive, no idea if it's even dearer in That France but I bet it is, the gits do anything to be awkward, so a small mortgage should realise enough for a tankful before leaving the UK to buy as little as possible from them French Folk.

So feel free to hoot if you see a silver RAV4 with a Spanish flag and a little black bull sticker (the Black Bull of Valencia) on the back door

Dunno about petrol but I have a mate who drives to southern france every year and he reckons the diesel is waaay cheaper than UK. Which isn't hard frankly since it's going over 140p/L almost everywhere now!

All Rav drivers in West of Scotland have been told NOT to leave their owner's manual in their cars for 2 WEEKS MINIMUM.

Good luck with the trip, just back from Ayr and originate from Pompey !

Really interested in this as the most I have got out of the T180 (2.2) is an average of 28.6 !!

Am seriously thinking of getting rid !

Have a safe trip :D

Just emptied the tank and got a whopping 470miles out of it. Filled it to the top and she took 50 litres almost exactly.

Cruising on the motorway at 65/70mph I got her up to just over 50mpg!!

Well chuffed!! :yahoo:

Don't forget to back those readings up with tank to tank calcs as the trip computers play funny tricks.

Good shout anchs. It was just too late last night for my brain to manage those calcs!!

Anyway based on the numbers above, actual calcs are:

50 litres = 11 imperial gallons (near as dammit!)

Mpg = 470/11 = 42.7.

So significanttly less than the computer seems thinks.. Not bad tho for a 1.8 tonne, 2.2 turbo diesel I'd say!

Nice one Lee! I'll await the result eagerly.

I drove from West Yorks to Hull and then from Rotterdam to Northern Switzerland about 18 months ago and got 51.51 MPG ( brim-to-brim ). The journey back was "less sedate", particularly on the Belgian motorway north of Brussels ( dead straight and almost no traffic! ) and I got 47.61 MPG. For the rest of the time, around West Yorks I'm averaging 38ish. I have a spread sheet that shows all the fill-ups, MPG, cost, OBC "estimate" of MPG ( and its error ) on the RAV since it was new in April 2008. OK, OK - I should get out more, but I'm a bit obsessed with fuel consumption.

I also live in West Yorkshire and keep Excel spreadsheets with my fuel useage.

Your 38-ish mpg with a diesel is less than I would have expected. I wondered about getting a diesel but in the end got a petrol XT3, I am getting an average of 32mpg out of it round here at the moment, so am fairly pleased.

The Ultra-Gauge digital OBD readout really does help you watch what your right foot is doing, well worth the money I reckon.

Hi Phil,

fully agree about the OBD. Whilst it is not very accurate, it does give you a pretty good idea about how far your foot should be down and what gear you should be in. Not come across the Ultra Gauge - some of the members on here use the Scanguage and are very keen on it. Must have a look on Google.......

I don't see why not, but you can check it out on their website through the vehicle finder page.

I did but the only thing near it on their "drop down menu" was the tacoma. what I dont know is if my rav (2002) is "OBDII COMPLIANT" ?

I just checked out the results for 2000 & 2003 models, and they list the RAV.

The 2002 and 2003 were the same OBD spec as far as I know, so you should be fine. (someone else on here might confirm this)

Strange that there is a gap in the model year listing for the RAV though.

Send them an e-mail and they should be able to confirm that for you.

For the price its a super bit of kit.

Hello peeps,

Finally made it to a somewhat dismal Scotchland :!Removed!:

Some interim figures, to the last full tank, yesterday evening at the Shell garage on the M6 just north of Carslile where I was mugged for £71.29 for 47.24 litres of diesel - you lot must be seriously rich to pay that sort of money on a regular basis..

1626.3 kms has used 102.22 litres of diesel working out at 15.9098 kms per litre, the guage wotsit on the dash tells me the RAV is doing 15.1kms per litre so I'd say its pretty accurate

Converting that to UK values (somebody check coz I'm not good at sums) I get 1,010 miles covered on 22.5 gallons giving 44.91mpg.

That's about 50% on motorways, cruise control set at 130kph where poss. about 30% on "A" type roads and the rest in town or around country lanes, it includes setting off 3 speed cameras, not sure about the ones in road works, they dont flash, an unpaid tour into the congestion charging zone and 2 very annoyed traffic wardens one of whom referred to me as a "foreign c*nt" coz I would only talk to him in Spanish :yahoo: not that they affected fuel consumption very much!

Off tae Glasgae tomorrow or Sunday to see if I can find Big Kev's hoose and steal his handbook
