it would be going back if i had!!! We just seem to be spending money on trying different things but took it to toyota dealer today to get it re-synced but they said it was definitely the immobiliser that needs removing. It turns over but wont actually start very occassionly it might for 20 seconds or so!!

Classic problem. If you do a search on this part of the forum, you should come up with some of my older posts explaining what to do.

If you are handy with simple electrics its maybe a 1-3 hour job or quicker.

The immobiliser basically breaks into the ignition circuit to cut the power supply to the ignition hence it doesn't start. Generally, the immobilisaer is fitted low down below the glovebox and tied onto the metal frame below the radio - you can easily remove the plastic shrouds. Then follow the wires (2 wires) that go over to a wiring loom at the right side of the drivers footwell. these wires actually split the feed going to the ignition...so all you do is to cut the immobiliser wires and connect the feed wires together.

If in doubt ask an auto-electrician but don't bother a dealer as they don't specialise in electrics and none of the mechanics will be old enough to remember how these alarms are wired up. The alarms were fitted when the cars arrived in the UK and the installation method seems to vary from car to car ... and theres no manual for them!

Gies a shout if you get stuck - send a PM (Personal Message) cos I might miss your reply...

good luck. If I was closer, I'd do it for you.

I'm older than I probably look. Must be my boyish good looks! :P

I do remember the 4.1 coming out. In fact I had a look at it when it did. That was at the time when Mr T hadn't heard of diesel and I was not very impressed with the petrol fuel consumption, or the very low number of hinges!

Transponders were certainly being fitted by the likes of Ford by then, but I've never studied the 4.1 that closely, so, no, sorry can't really help. The give away would probably be a coil fitted around the ignition lock.

I know that transponders were being fitted to 1997 Previas cos I have one and got a new key cut.

Anybody else out there... or have a search on the rav4world site??

They tend not to publish such information. It kind of takes the point away. I've had a look in my stuff and don't have it.

Hi,I asked a couple of Guys at work who used to work on the 4.1's and they said the immobiliser was factory fitted in Japan and the Alarm was fitted over here (UK),I worked on the Ravs from about 2000 (4.2's)

The immobiliser was fitted after the cars got to Uk and were not factory fitted. Not sure about the 1998 models.  If the immobiliser is still fitted below glove box, it should be easier to trace the cables to find where it interupts the ignition wires.  An auto electrician should be able to sort it quickly.
