Not to clued up on your model, but here goes

Do you lose a lot of brake fluid? I presume the clutch is connected to the brake circuit?

Did you bleed the clutch circuit properly?

If it is leaking you need to find out exactly where its leaking from? Could just be a loose connection, letting in air and out fluid? May just need a nut tightening?

any pictures would be great, as they say " A picture speaks a thousand words"

Maybe a crazy scottish guy will be along soon, with the right answer?

NOT LOSING MUCH FLUID ,BUT OIL IS LEAKING

AT THE BACK OF THE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER WHERE IT CONNECTS TO THE PEDAL,BUT JUST A DRIP

ITS A 1998 2LTR vx, YES BLEED PROPERLY, ITS IS A SEPERATE CIRCET.

THE MOTOR FACTERS SAY I NEED A NEW MASTER CYLINDER BUT IF I CAN GET A REPAIR KIT

ITS JUST AN "o" RING CHANGE

Sorry, jedi, just a midlander, don't know for sure, having an auto but I would have thought that the clutch would have it's own reservoir.

If Mr T does not supply new seals I bet there are others who would.

If you do go down that route, may i suggest that you check that the cylinder bore is not scored.Light scoring can sometimes be corrected with a suitable bore honing tool.

Hope i'm not trying to help grannie suck eggs!!

You could try these http://www.brakesint.co.uk/index.html

Vw told me there was no repair kit for my Golf`s caliper and that I had to buy the whole caliper at £90 plus my old one in exchange. Even thou in the Official VW repair manual they do have a repair kit mentioned???????????

The kit cost me £10 all seals etc for the front caliper.

They do clutch parts too?

Or maybe Ormi is correct and non for Toyota????

Still a master cylinder can be sourced cheaper than £100 for sure.

Just the seals even cheaper like crofter says............. I wish I knew how to suck eggs :crybaby:

nope new cylinder req...no repair kit..

I would agree if it was brake cylinder, but I should think that you and I were schooled in different times.

In the past I have performed this repair many times without any trouble, but times change, not always for the better.

Is a clutch master cylinder so changed in form now or is it just easier to slap a new unit on every time?

This question is asked without prejudice, I just wondered, thats all.

Maybe Box is trying to save a few £££s and is capable of doing this himself,it may give him satisfaction to do so!

Just to add Vw also said I needed to buy a whole brake hose for £35 plus vat just to get the 10p copper washer I needed... Which I bought from a motor factors in the end. What Vw don`t stock copper washers? I bet they find one if they do the repair. I just laughed at them...... Guy on the parts desk looked confused.

OK - the clutch master cylinder has its own reservoir system. The master cylinder isn't that large and you could try sending Parts King a PM to ask a price for a new one... or try a car breakers who specilise in Jap cars.

I've noticed the same issue on one of my RAVs but haven't checked for any leak - put it down to my weak left paw ! Next time the car is in I'll get the guys to double check it.

Its one of these parts which is probably available in the USA or Australia where the RAV was much more popular and you can still get parts for the 4.1.

hello

yoouo did not state where the leak is from? from impulse tube connections or from the side of cylinder stem? the first is beng re-tighten, but in case you have a master seal ring worn down, then it is better to buy a new cylinder assembly -- the new is new. i ve been trying to change all seals on other cars but you know during normal operation both seal and bore are subjected to wear down. even though you change the seal, the bore liner has also minor inner diameter increasing by repeatedly sliding for years. i would not recommend you to use repair kit. The mixture (rubber powder with brake fluid)will act as additional abrasive in case you simply change seals. it is necessary to flash all brake/clutch system. the same is also for control clutch cylinder on the engine body. cheers/Igor

also i have noticed that when she cant get the gears,

even when the engine is off, this seams a bit strange to say the lest.

I think i will change the gear box oil to see if this helps

these are links of the same chain -- the clutch can not be released and as the result the shaft can not be revolved leading you can not catch correct gear when all is in static condition. the fist thing to do is to reach correct performance of clutch releasing. but for sure i admit due to minor wear down of synchronizers the 1st and 2nd gears might have an issue with switch in. cheers/Igor

The gearbox is a pretty sturdy unit. A common fault is popping out of 5th gear which comes from resting the hand on the gear lever. Other than that the box is bomb-proof.

I have read one post which was asking about adjusting the cables.

However if you have found fluid leaking from the clutch cuylinder it may be that its not able to give any pressure/movement to the clutch release hence the gear change prob.

Just think - if you had a landrover, you could buy a new clutch cylinder for less than a bottle of whisky.... but as I've had a landrover in for repairs for 3 years, I'd not recommend that!!!
