Is This Another Dmf Thing Brewing?

For a while my 4.2 derv has had the judders through the transmission when setting off from cold (although oddly the judders go away when it's hot?). I thought it might be some sort of contamination of the clutch plate and have been able to temporarily remove the problem by deliberately "abusing" the clutch a bit.

Now when I start to let the clutch out (and just as the drive starts to become engaged) I'm getting an odd noise. Difficult to describe but a sort of metallic chirping if there is such a thing.

Could this be signs of impending DMF doom?

does sound likley................mine has a slight judder when cold for the 1st 3-5 clutch changes from 1st only, then its ok. I hope my DMF is not on the way out.

No metalic sounds thou, only when going over bumps, but I hope this is suspension related.

Bugger! Think I will let it develop and (hopefully) catch it before it actually detonates. Research into solid flywheel jobbie commencing.......

Hi

My clutch gave up a week ago so I have had a Single flywheel/clutch conversion kit fitted as Toyota GB wanted nothing to do with it!!!!!! :censor:

It now runs fine and I'm hopefully over the DMF issues. I sourced the parts and my local independant fitted them

Good Luck :)

I don`t surpose you would like to say how much this all cost?

Just for future reference like.

I had exactly the same symptoms as you, I paid £300 for the kit from euro and had it fitted for £200 at my mates garage (mates rates). Car is perfect now and you would not know the difference between that and the DMF.

Cool so a big price difference from what Toyota would charge. £200 for clutch kit is not too bad, what prices are the DMF clutch kits?

Nig.xl - did you leave yours until it got worse? If so how how did it develop so I know what to look out for. Think I've got the wrong sort of mates as well......none of them even know what a spanner is.

Hi Pogle

Mine felt like oil contamination as in a judder when taking up drive. Also it felt like the engine was labouring when going up hills, so much so that I had to change down a gear when normally the car would sail up it.

I decided then to change it then before it got any worse and maybe did damage. It was not an easy job by all accounts but they said after doing it once the next one would be easier .

The garage next door had changed the DMFs on all of its transit minibus taxi fleet to solid, they take a fraction of the time being rear wheel drive and 2 wheel drive and the parts are cheaper too.

  • 1 month later...

Vibes and noises are now getting worse (and as described by others) so I have decided to bite the bullet. Have decided to go for an SMF conversion together with new clutch. Have gone for a Borg and Beck SMF and clutch - more expensive than some other kits but their stuff seems to be held in high regard. Bits are in my garage and car booked in for next week. Fingers crossed it holds together until then........
