Which Panel Filter Is Best To Buy?

HI all...

I've heard K&N panel filters arent so good...rumours say that they can affect the maf sensor in some way...

So i've come across a Pipercross panel filter on eBay at £24.99 delivered which seems a fair price...BUT is it any better? Does it really improve fuel economy? And how do you clean them?

Sammy

Hey Sammy,

I've got 2 K&N air filters on my cars. One is an Avensis T-180 and the other is a Polo TDi an I've never had a problem with the MAF's on either of them, and the Polo has almost 200k on the clock. I think they're great tbh and let the engine breath better. Very easy to clean with a re-gen pack you can buy that also has the oil spray.

But if you can get a Pipercross for that kinda money I'd give it a whirl

personally id stay away from foam filters. the foam can dry up and bits can fall off and go straight into the engine potentially causing harm  and they dont have the best filtration

pay the little extra for the blitz one

Thanks for the advice guys...i've been asking around...local mechanics...mates...etc...and everyone seems to think the Pipercross foam filter should be fine...some claim the fact that its foam should make the engine breath easier...

Mr-P is saying the foam may break and cause damage but surely they wouldnt design a filter that did that? We only have a small filter 289mm by 149mm so i think it should be fine.

I really want to buy it off eBay tomorrow...can anyone send me some final advice please??? I can afford to pay £24.99 but dont really want to stretch anymore for a K&N or Fensport etc. I'll be keeping my car for another 6months or so and would like to try it but im a likkle worried! Help please

Read the Bob Is The Oil Guy link and decide on neither. Both are oiled which isnt good, foam is designed for high flow and therefore less filteration, oiled cotton starts off ok but becomes more clogged over time

Paper filters are the best for filteration and perform fine as long as they are replaced when they should be

Dry type filters are the best comprimise between filteration and flow like AEM and Apexi but even if you fit one of their induction kits you'll notice no performance difference, just a noise

The main induction restriction on the T-sport is the Filter box and not the filter it self.

The Airbox is shared with some of the lower powered corollas and

I cut open a hole in the lower part of the airbox and I am so happy with this! ( although a lot thought I was stupid, I will still recommend this)

Search for Free DIY intake Mod and you will find the thread.

Guys...im just looking at this Pipercross filter...looks good from the top...but its a lot thinner than i expected...looks like 2.5cm of sponge...is that normal? Unless its just air-tight in the bag and will expand once in the box? I can see a very thin coating of oil on one side of the bag...and what looks like water drops on the other side of the bag...hmmmmm...am i doing the right thing?????????????????

Hi Sam,

Hope all goes well with the new filter. I must admit looking very carfully at these Piper ones but I didn't like the idea of foam and what could happen to it when it got older and and mayb started to harden up! I went for the K&N in the end. Mind you I think that has cotton in it so I hope that doesn't fly through my Turbo neither!

Oil+maf sensor = world of hurt (alot of cash for a new maf)

Or at least a possiabilty of it.the maf sensor doesn't like oil too much so just becareful

It has been an interesting read this, I went for a blitz panel filter in favour of all the other options and have been made up with it, you get a nice induction noise from it and it seems to be very good quality, I checked the filter the other day after it being in for a few months removed a little bit of debris after that it looked brand new, well worth the money imho

If anyone wants a K&N pannel filter I've got one, I kept it when I got rid of my CTS, it's seen less than 5000 miles of driving. I'll take £30 for it

Hi Shoney, if you haven't yet sold that I think I would be interested. What's he best way to contact you?

Hi Sam, I can't profess to have much experience of filters and the T Sport - but I had a PiperX foam panel filter on my Pug 306 and it definitely improved response.

To the gents saying that the MAF gets clogged by oil, is that not just a symptom of excessive oiling of the filter prior to installation?

A filter is a filter no matter who makes it, just stick to a well branded make.

I can guarantee that what ever filter you opt for YOU will not feel any gains in power OR improve MPG. (placebo)

I went along the route of K&N cone induction on a modified OEM air box, I only went along this route for the noise that it makes and this just compliments the "lifts" hooligan behaviour.

Also too much emphasis is placed on oiled filters causing MAF sensor faults, this is not really a problem, more of a urban myth that folk like to continue. Some folk will say it contaminates your MAF, I say pay more attention to preventative maintenance instead, like clean it once a year.

The oil in the K&N filters do not mess up the MAF's in my experiance. If you take a look on the VW forums you'll see lots of people using them and some very good specialist car garage dealers using them. I've never had a problem with the MAF on either of my Polo or Avensis that thy are both on. And the Polo has almost 200k on the clock.
