Timing Chain Gasket Oil Leak

Hi All,

Noticed a very minimal engine oil leak on my 55 plate TSport the other week while changing the gear box oil. Cleaned the oil sump and checked nuts, all seems to be fine, took car to dealership today as still under warranty and they have said they think it’s coming from the timing chain gasket?? Can someone explain to me where that is as I cannot see it? They have said they will replace it but I am suspicious. Anyone know how much of the engine, belts and bits and pieces need stripping out to get to it? The leak is not bad enough that it is leaking or I’m losing any oil must be so minimal really, don’t fancy half the engine out which could cause more problems if not really needed. However the work is free!

Hi Dave,

The timing chain cover is located to the left of the engine as if you are stood looking at the front of the car, look for the drive belt then the cover is there. If it is under warranty get them to sort it as it is a !Removed! 2 do with the engine in as it's not a type of paper gasket but a bead of silicone gasket. So when you try to slide the cover back into position it is very easy 2 knock the bead which would have to be done again 2 ensure a good seal. I think i am correct or if some1 can correct me then please do.

To re-seal the timing chain cover, it does seem involve removing rocker cover, offside engine mount, belts & pulleys. It also involves removing the cam chain tensioner from what I can now see. I’m not losing any oil it was just a recommendation I found in the service book from when the previous owner had the car on the 40k service. (Advice - slight oil leak reseal - £171) that’s all the info I had to go on. Would not have noticed if not read that can’t see any evidence previous owner had work done though. It’s so minimal I’m now thinking of just leaving it as brought car from a Peugeot dealership and it/they could create more problems than it is worth, car has now done 60k and no problems since then.

I've got a slight weep coming from there too, its a small drip every now and again. When I whip the engine out of my car I'm going to change that and also do the oil seal behind the crank pulley.

From looking at my EPC catalogue, the seal looks like a giant O ring that is shaped, I tried googling photos to see what the seal looked like but to no avail.

The seal is £5 from Toyota.

My dad has just re sealed his on his gen 7 celica.

Like yours it did't effect the running of the car, just a small blob of oil.

He had to take the rocker cover off I think.

For disassembly you'll need the belt off, front wheel liner off, gear puller on the crank pulley, not sure about the oil pump and rocker head cover
