  • 1 month later...

seems like ive got the same problem as you said in my thread, i will have to tell my garage to check these , they are a toyota specialist so should understand what im saying, leebo have you got the part number for the valve rockers ?

you got inlet bank and exhaust bank. it comes as a set, a cam and valve rockers. you can't just replace 1 rocker to my announce partsking is the chap to see and cheapest I could find. I'll have my morning coffee and I'll get you the numbers.

Would it be a good idea to check these before they do an oil change ? Don't want to have to do 2 oil changes at £50 a bottle of oil

Also will I need new cams if my problem is the same as yours ? Sorry for the questions, just can't stop worrying about it lol

the cam comes with the rockers, the whole bank and cam for inlet cost me around £280. I done a engine flush and oil change (money down the dunni) befor I had opened up the rocker cover. long as you have oil in there imo id just send it to get looked at.. now I will just say that when we was diagnosing the problems to test the vvt-l ocv it requires your car to be reved up to 7500 rpm. now if like me you got bits of broken rocker clanging around under the rocker cover this test could seriously end in tears. as a precaution don't hit lift, stay below the lift band.

ive read that you can test the ocv by pulling it out and wiring up a 12v supply, the ocv should then make a click noise. i will tell the garage to check the rockers and cams before they attempt an oil change.

car has oil in , i have to drive to work slowly then drop car off during work, garage is very close to work. i will post our findings tomorrow when i finish work, hope it will just be rockers and nothing too serious

Few questions:

- How badly are these worn

- what Could of caused this?

- how soon will I have to get this fixed?

my good cam had them lighter gray marks on the lift lobes. its deep wear marks you need to feel for like the last picture above the lift bolts. I personally would look into a new cam and bank of valve rockers before it gets any worse.. any taps yet?

My comp was tapping the other day? Not heard it after that though? A bit worrying now.

the charger can throw out some tappity noises mind, but the tapp you get from worn cam is loud. vvt doing its thing can be noisy alone

yeah the 2zz is noisy. its like when u notice the sign language women on tv, soon as you notice her, game over! its all you watch.. same with your tap.. next time you hear it just rev your engine gently upto 5k normal taps will disappear with engine noise, cam slap gets really loud and increasing speep with revs..

Is it normal that ours is absolutely silky smooth?... Since using Blitz oils she's run way better.

after the compressor it gos into the inlet manifold, that horrible gray chunk with compressor stamped on it lol, that seems to amplify the valve noise, I think that's what he's hearing imo. my comp is sweet as a nut touch wood..

My engine isn't tapping like some of the video's i've seen, There is a very slight tappy sound that actually come from the same side of my engine as the worn cam. How much did you pay for a new cam and bank of valve rockers ??

I've been thinking about getting stage two cams, but apart from a piggy back ecu obv, what else would I need to buy?

kingo is your man for the cam and rockers, £280 delivered(I've the memory of a door stop). it does sound like you should replace it sooner rather then later.. inside the rocker is a pin looks like a carpet tac it acts as a piston when lifts engaged and diverts oil to the lift shims of the rocker. when I hit the lift band the lift lobe had so much wear that when it slapped the rocker shim with so much force it forced the piston to retract and shattered the chamber (see photos) into pieces. with you piggyback and stage 2 cams... I'm still to get that far so I can't advise on that yet sorry .. I'm still waiting for my new pully to be finished

i got my garage to order my cam and rockers from toyota approx £260 + vat , hope to get my car back tomorrow and i will ask for my cam back and post a pic of how much they are worn (this is hoping the worn cam is the culprit for the tapping noise that is)
