Baffled By Coolant Baffle

I went to check the coolant for the first time recently, took the top off the reservoir,

and was baffled to see, rather than an open tube and the coolant easily visible, the filler

tube is baffled with plastic. I've not seen this before on a car. What is the reasoning

behind this arrangement? How does one get a tube into the coolant to check the percentage

mix?

Hey,

Why bother ? !

First check the colour of the coolant - if its an obvious Pink and your car bonnet has a sticker saying its filled with Toyotas long life coolant its good for 100,000 miles before changing.

If its standard stuff then its changed at 40,000 miles or 3 years.

Assume you do not know the recent history of the car so if it has standard coolant in, it would be more prudent to do a change with the correct ratio mix, its cheap enough.

If you have been having to top up your coolant level with water, hence the need to want to check its stength, then you really need to find the leak.

I have to disagree with the OP, if its checked and found to be ok rather than just changing the coolant it will save time, effort and money.

I cant answer the original question tho.
