Problem With Starting Rav 4 After Long Journey

I dont know if anyone has had a similar problem with a 2001 Rav4 D4D VX, but if I travel any further than 10 miles in the car, turn it off and then try to start it again it will not start. It starts first time when I initially start it this just seems to happen when the car has travelled for a certain distance. When I try to turn the ignition over it seems like the Battery is flst (even though the Battery is not flat) if i leave it for 20 minutes or so and then start it is fine. This has been going on a while, and i think that it is the starter motor, but just wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue before I take it to the garage for them to look at.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to TOC

Sounds like it maybe the cam shaft sensor or the coolant temp sensor! But get the code read and you know where you're upto

If it sounds like the Battery is flat it is either the Battery IS flat (it needs drop testing) or the starter windings which work OK after cooling.

Hello Paul....my 02 4d4 did the same thing, started ok from cold but wouldn't start when hot with the same symptoms as yours Battery ok but sounding flat. I changed the starter but used one from a salvage yard which was ok to begin with but ended up with same problem. Local Toyota dealer also said it was the starter at fault.
