Help - Price Of A New Egr Valve And Did I Need One?

Ok, tis a long story about my little car. In a nutshell, my 2005 2.0 D4D Corolla (78k miles) was experiencing a loss of power in the cold mornings. It would start fine, but as I set out on my journey, if I gave it any hard acceleration uphill or through a change of gear round corners the car lost power and cut out. I could start it again immediately and the orange malfunction light would come on, but it would be fine to drive. This light usually only stayed on for one day or so. Changing fuel filter didn't seem to work, though it was hard to tell as these incidents were spaced apart

Fast forward two years....

Last week, it came on and simply stayed on. After a lot of research I thought the EGR valve needed cleaned. I left it into my local mechanic and asked him to replace fuel filter and clean EGR valve. He rang back to say my EGR valve is faulty (he tried cleaning it but the computer still showing error), I needed a new one £215+vat+cost of fitting. He told me it was showing on the error codes. I reluctantly agreed, I like to research these things first but was in a hurry for my car.

Anyhow, I decided to do some ringing round this morning and am getting told that an EGR valve is only around £160+vat, and one Toyota specialist told me that they rarely need replaced. He said that he had cleaned a lot of them and never needed to replace one.

Any thoughts - was I ripped off or is that a reasonable price? And, how likely is an EGR valve to need replaced?

Many thanks for any opinions you can give!

If the valve is stuck open and faulty after cleaning then a new one will have to be replaced. I bought my new valve (And pipe/gaskets) off eBay for £130 all in for my Avensis. I would take a search on there to see if anyone is selling one. Fitting isn't that hard a job I found

Not sure if this this is the correct ones for your car... http://www.ebay.co.u...sh=item3a6e368a http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a6e60e964

You wont need the pipe just the valveand remember this is main dealer prices. You can pick them up for way less than that...

Damn. Unfortunately I just told him to go ahead with the price he gave me (being in a genuine hurry for the car). But after seeing that and getting the quote from the other mechanic, I now feel like I've paid too much (female here so always wary that some dodgy mechanics rip me off).

He hadn't mentioned it being stuck open, I was just wondering how likely this is to be the case, again given that the second mechanic seemed to think it was highly unlikely? (or is that like asking how long is a piece of string?? )

Thanks for your reponse - appreciated

The going rate is about £300 all in at Mr T, so its not a rip off as such, more like paying full price.

Ok, thanks, then it wasn't too bad as such.

i can't comment on the price although it seems high from what others have said. but why did he replace the EGR valve, a good clean is all they need generally. unless you've been doing hardcore town mileage and using poor quality fuel and not looking after the car generally meaning the EGR valve was so caked up that it was just past it?

either way the work is done now and when i had my EGR cleaned i noticed a difference, i can only assume it'd be even greater with a new part. :)

i have a 1.4 D4D and had a very similar issue

i wont get into the full story but my car was cutting out for 18 months and after going to 6 different people the problem was dirty fuel.

as a procausion he changed the fuel pump as he said he wasnt happy with it and reconed the dirt would have affected it

toyota wanted 2,000euro for a new pump which is made by Bosch and the crowd who fixed it charged 350euro for a new Bosch pump.....

think however my error was reading fuel system or something along them lines

as for egr i also had to replace this as 1 day when i was cleaning it i broke the electrical pins as i was reconnecting it and cost me 300euro from toyota and 40euro for a garage to fit
