Toyota Rav4 Automatic (2000) Dashboard Warning Light Problem

Hi there

We have a 2000 imported automatic Rav4.

This afternoon whilst driving along the dashboard engine warning light (EWL) came on. Almost immediately i noticed that the car was revving higher in order to change gear. The overdrive symbol on the dashboard also started flashing.

I turned off the OD. The engine warning light remains on whilst i'm driving. If I stop the car and turn off the engine and then turn the engine back on, the EWL comes back on at the point where you would normally expect the transmission to move up a gear (it does do this but only in higher rev's than normal).

Any idea's?
