Hi, can anyone help please.

just recently purchased a t spirit 2.0 d4d 2007 private buy, so no warranty.

car is a dream to drive, waited a long time for the right one to become available at the right price.

Had the car for three days, and then the problem started.

Go to start the car in the morning, wait for green light, turns over for ages before finally starting.

Have taken it to an independant garage, put it on a computer, no engine management light illuminated or fault registering. apparently two of the glow plugs were faulty ,so went with the option of changing all four glow plugs. still the problem still exsists.

Also the car has only done 50,000 miles with full toyota service history. starting to think glow plugs were fine and something else is at fault. The problem has been happening more and more at any time of the day, so not just in cold temperatures. any help would be much appreciated.

When was the fuel filter changed last? Could be a problem with the coolant temp sensor...

Starting issue possible causes:

Clutch pedal sensor engage pedal to the floor before trying to start

Weak Battery or terminal connections loose

Glow plugs

Low fuel may cause a problem in this weather

Air filter

Clean Maf sensor

Immobiliser not responding because of weak batteries in key remote

Fuel filter water contaminated drain or replace

Try using thiner grade oil

Injector problem

Crankshaft sensor dirty

If its got a full history the fuel filter should have been changed at 40k, so...when it eventually starts does it produce smoke?

If it does i would be finding a diesel specialist and seeing if they could test the injectors, when our Verso had new injectors (about 55,000 miles) the symptoms were similiar. If you go to Mr T they will want to change all them all and that will be very expensive.

I`d guess your right skip, you`ll have to look elsewhere for the solution, check out the suggestions already made.

Hi,

Had same problem. 2 fuel injectors were faulty. Replaced all 4 at cost of £900. Engine had done 59,000. Toyota contributed 50% of cost.

This occured after the head gasget went due to known fault. Toyota covered full cost.

Kinda regretting buying this car. Two major and expensive faults at only 59,000.

Hi , thanks for all the replys so far , will try all the obvious and simple ones 1st.

After this, if i have no joy, then off to toyota. A bit worring, as i was informed these cars were bullet proof ,trouble free motoring. Just grateful it does finally start, just so intermitent :-)))))

in my short experience of the auris would have say they are probably amongst the most unreliable and poorly built motors on the market

Hi, I have had the same problematic starting with my t-spirit since I bought mine at 17000 miles. It's now done 71000. Same year as yours too. I also changed all 4 glow plugs to no avail. I ruled put blocked/faulty injectors cos wouldn't they give you problem driving as well as starting?

I've cleaned the EGR value twice. And also run two tins over two years of BG244 fuel additive.

Anyways, mine only gives me problem when it's cold. Like 5C or below, otherwise it starts fine. Also using a thinner oil helps. And also I found that using esso gives me the best starting. Silicone based Diesel from the local Tescos gives the poorest starting. My car absolutely hates Tescos fuel........

Sorry I don't have answer for you, but hopefully some of this info' will help.

If the heater glow plugs have been replaced, have you checked the electrical feed to them,? it may be the glow plug relay/timer fault and not letting the glow plugs heat for long enough.

car has only started fine once this week, its in the garage tonight, so they can do a test tomorrow morning. they are going to recalibrate the injectors, then if this fails, they will do a pressure test on injectors, seem to think while the car is sat for hours doing nothing ,the diesel runs away from the injectors causing a delay to the starting. hopefully a bad seal somewhere. will know more tomorrow and keep you all informed. very intersting about the tesco fuel though, because thats all weve put in since having it, and as far as im aware it was fine for the first two days. thanks for all support.

As Big Auris said there will a control unit for the Glow plugs and its own fuse .

A test lamp will show if a feed is getting through to the glow plugs.but engine must be cold when testing.

I have the same car and after a years ownership I have had zero problems. Starts first time every time evne in the coldest weather.

I would suggest take it straight to Mr T.

I have tried before getting cars fixed on the cheap and it always ends up costing me more.

Find a good Toyota garage and go there.

Try HONESTJOHN for a list of good garages in your area.

If the engine turns over and you have smoke from the exhaust tail pipe and it will not start, it means it is getting fuel but not being able to ignite it. If this is the case it still would point to engine heater/glow plugs. If there is no smoke it would point to lack of fuel or as you say the fuel bleeding back and causing air in the fuel line, is there a hand primmer some where in the fuel line that you can operate and prime the fuel system before trying to start, this would at least rule out the fuel problem

There is a modified suction control valve available now to cure bad starting, iv fitted a few at work and customers say its fixed it, the dealers should know about this because there is a bullitin about it, hope this helps!

Liam, In your sig you say you have an EGR Bypass. Is that exclusive to your engine, or is there a way of bypassing the EGR on a SR180?

i have the 1.4 diesel engine and the egr is vacume contoled so i just disconnected the vaccume pipe and put a screw in the end of it to blank it, so now the egr doesnt operate, when you put ur foot down the turbo comes in a little quicker as it isnt waiting for the egr to shut, the one on your engine is electronicly controled so to blank it you would probably have to make a blanking plate out of metal around 2mm thick, iv done that on a vauxhall and it was fine but not on your engine, i would say it would work but might bring the light on, also the point of an egr is to keep emissions down and to cool down combustion temps so although its been ok on mine i dont know if it would affect your engine by doing this, my advise would be good fuel type and boot it now and again, if you do you should never need to take it off and clean it, one of our customers uses a 2.2 avensis as a fleet car which has the same egr system and has done nearly 200,000 miles without an egr fault because it gets an ***** kicking most days probably! hope that info is some use to you.

You confirmed what i suspected, as my last car had a vacuum EGR which I blanked the same way you have, but I know that isn't possible with mine. I was hoping for some sort of pipe to divert around the valve.

Not to worry, I will stick to Shell fuel and manually cleaning it every 10K for peace of mind.

thanks again for all information, cars still in garaged and i am unable to try some of the things mentioned . However i have been feeding information to them, and they are positive one injector is down, been sent away for a testing. they were unable to make it start and keep telling me white smoke coming from the back is a sure sign of lack of fuel. But one thing is for sure i will def be changing fuel, and going for the new modified suction valve. (which i can only imagine as being a none return valve) thanks again will keep you up to date, and hopefully have it back soon. :-)))

Dont understand the theory that white smoke from exhaust is lack of fuel, if its lack of fuel what is the engine trying ignite to produce this smoke ????

Hi , Big Auris,

It all seems strange to me. I am a builder, love cars, trying to second guess everything is outta my league on this one. have been told that the glow plugs will only operate at 2-5 degrees, and this has been happening at well above 5. Also i do accept that it could be a faulty injector, but seems strange that it wont fire on first turn, but it is so close then just turns over and over. I do think tescos fuel is a big concern.

The cold weather does seem to expose injector issues, there seem to be quite a few threads at the mo regarding cold starting diesels.

Use a fuel treatment it will help to clean the injectors if they are clogged, and as many have said the occasionaly let the car rev when safe to do so to clear the EGR valve and the soot build up. Surprisingly my engine don't seem to let out any soot when accelerating hard in comparison to VAG cars.

I have always used Shell fuel & kept Fuel & Air filters maintained.

Not had any issues so far although its now on 72k and my first proper winter with the Auris will keep you posted.

Try a double glow rather than glowing the plugs once before starting turn ignition of wait 2 seconds and try again it will help starting to be easier & puts less strain on your Battery.
