Will Not Start

Hope this is in the right section, I have a friend with a 1.4 2000 reg Toyota Corolla (engine 4ZZ-FE)

which is not starting. Read the DTC's and it pinged up "P0170 (Fuel trim (FT), bank 1 - Malfunction". It turns over ok, occasionally sounds though it tries to fire, but won't. when cranked you can smell a faint trace of petrol at the exhaust.

I cleared the fault code, but it still won't start and the code has not re-appeared.

I'm not familiar with these engines, what should I be checking for/looking to fix or replace?
