New Tyres... Wow!

Having owned many decent cars over the years, including a number of Alfas and Mercedes, I never expected to get excited about a Prius, but since I bought my Gen II in August, I have enjoyed every mile in it and honestly didn't think it could get much better, until...

The week before last, I had to have four new tyres fitted to the Prius. Having had the "wrong" tyres on it before (as fitted by the previous Toyota dealers - non-LRR Bridgestone Turanzas), I did a bit of homework on the internet and discovered the Yokohama E501 dB, designed specifically for hybrids and decided to give them a whirl, so to speak.

Through Tesco tyres (via BlackCircles.com) I paid £490 for the four (plus £19.60 of Clubcard points) fitted at a local garage, which was about £80 more than for other LRR brands and I have now covered about 300 miles on them.

To summarise the experience to date, the only word I find adequate is WOW!

The Prius has always been quiet - now it is outstandingly so, virtually silent in fact, even on the worst sections of the M50 and M5 motorways.

The ride has always been good - now it is on a par with my Mercedes E-Class with Airmatic suspension.

Fuel economy has always been impressive - it has now improved by about 10%.

Handling was always more than adequate for a bit of fun on the country roads near me - they are every bit as enjoyable as before.

Even driving to work in the snow at 5am this morning before the gritters had woken up wasn't an issue.

Clearly I cannot yet comment on the longevity - I will let you know when they need replacing - but so far, the extra mpg will more than cover the additional cost of the tyres themselves and even if it didn't, the improvement in the driving experience would make them well worthwhile.

I never thought I'd get excited about a Prius and I did. I certainly never expected to get excited over a set of tyres, but I am!

It must be middle-age creeping up on me!

You sure the Turanza's weren't LLR? Or should I say they offer LLR and non LLR Turanza's. The LLR has Ecopia on the side wall. Glad your new tyres are working out for you.

Exactly.

As I said, they were Turanzas, not Turanza Ecopias, so not LRR. If they had been Turanza Ecopias, the subsequent fuel saving would be even more impressive, but I'm not trying to give credit where it isn't due. Maybe another LRR tyre would give equivalent fuel savings.

Wow, expensive. Nearly as much as Michelin Energy Saver.

Given the weather at the moment, excellent timing to be on fresh rubber, why did you leave it so late?;)

Yes, it was good timing, although I can't claim any credit for forward thinking. I just left it till now as the old tyres didn't need changing. Any benefit gained from better mpg would have immediately been negated by changing them before necessary.

Very glad I have done now though. :)

Total cost was about £80 more than for non-LRR Turanzas, which with the extra mpg (in current driving conditions) gives a break-even point of around 6,000 miles, after which I'm in profit.

Reports I've read give the Yokohamas good scores for wear too, I'll just have to see how they fare on that one.

What "plot"? I bought the tyres through Tesco tyres five weeks ago. They're hardly a niche or specialist supplier and they fit at local tyre fitting places all around the country - even in Essex! I'm surprised your contact at Yokohama haven't heard of them, they have quite a number of retail outlets around the country I believe.

I was just recommending a product that I had found very beneficial and thought other owners might want to know about, I won't bother next time.

Hi Stompe, they charge £2.99 delivery per tyre. Factor in another tenner tops per tyre to get changed at your local fitter? I've no connection with them, but have used them in the past and had tyres delivered.

Hi Stompe,

If you don't want the hassle, you could try Blackcircles, who use a local fitter. About the same price by the time you've paid for postage and fitting. Or you could try E-tyres, who are usually a bit more expensive, but they come to you. I've used both with no problems.

Hi jdrrco

I think something has got lost in translation here. The tyres you suggested the Yokohama E501 I am told by Yokohama they are not available in England and the equivalent are Yokohama E70j as fitted on the Lexus CT200 that is what I meant by the plot thickens. I phoned a few tyre dealers and they could not get the E501s. No offence meant just a bit confused.

Thanks Ancient Nerd for the info much appreciated, will look into. As I am due for a tyre change I quite fancy the Yokahamas as oppose to the Michelins.

Clearly your "contact" at Yokohama is mistaken.

As stated in my original post, I have these tyres and they were fitted just a few weeks ago having been bought through Tesco tyres who are supplied by Blackcircles.com.

You have subsequently been told by others that both Blackcircles and Camskill offer them. You thank them for the information (some of which I had supplied in the first post!) yet you carry on arguing that the tyres aren't even available in the UK!

As you clearly don't believe me for some reason (although why on earth you think I'd invent a set of tyres is beyond me!), I have attached photos of the offending items for your information.

The only reason for posting was that I thought the information may be useful for others. There is really no need for this kind of insinuation.

If the information is useful, please use it. If not, ignore it. I will not enter into any further correspondence on the matter.
