1998 Avensis Stripping Drive Belts! Help!

Hi guys,

Had my avensis for 2 months now, when i bought it i got a bargain from the guy across the road as it was almost out of MOT and had stripped a drive belt.

I got the belt put back on and 2 month down the line its snapped it again, the garage has put another one on for me but want to find a permanent solution.

The belt is the one that goes from the alternator pulley to the powered steering pump pulley and then the crankshaft pulley at the bottom on the engine i believe.

My question is what is a long term solution and why does it keep stripping the belts?

The garage told me that i need to buy the part, which to the best of my abilities i think is the crankshaft pulley?

The powered steering and water pump go when the belt snaps.

Any help would be appreciated as i'd love to get it sorted for good!

if they say its the pulley then its probably got a chip/gouge/crack/split in it or mishaped in some way. Once this occurs there is no going back unless you want to keep replacing the belt. Get a price for the pulley, if its expensive try a scrapyard.

Hi Paul,

The mechanic mentioned soemthing along the lines of a rubber bushing or bearing inside the pulley which may have deterioated.

Does anyone know the exact name of this pulley, i bought the haines manual but even that doesn't have a simple diagram naming the parts of the engine!

Although i think its the crankshaft pulley (its near the bottm on the engine)

Now, I don't want to confuse matters here, so feel free to ignore me, but...

I'm thinking your water pump might be the issue. I'm pretty sure that the crankshaft pulley is just a lump of metal with no bushes or anything like that. After all, why would you want a pulley to move on its axis?

I also remember that when I priced up a timing belt change on a Rover the gargae recommended a new water pump because it was generally the water pump seizing that snapped timing belts. I know we are not talking about timing belts here but belts is belts and, coincidentally, yours is driving the water pump. Is the water pump spinning freely, even under load?

Wierd that it lasts for a while before faiing though. Maybe the pulleys aren't properly aligned, perhaps the alternator is out of line with the other pulleys?

The part you need is the crankshaft pulley wheel. It is a two part item. The inner casting is bonded to the outer wheel by a rubber bushing which can fail.

Note that the engine you have will (probably) be the 7A-FE (1.8) but the principle is the same.

That is exactly what caused shredded belts in my wife's 1998 Avensis. The rubber is a sort of shock absorber and through time separates from the metal at the bond. Replacement is the only cure.

Dead right on that one. The pulley is also a T.V. (torsional vibration) damper, without this, the crankshaft would be prone to cracking. The rubber absorbs the vibrations so that they dont build up in the crank.

hi i do hope you managed to sort problem with your drive belts ,

it may be your belt tensioner that causing belt to shred ,because if the automatic tensioners are released when the belt breaks it cause the pulley out of alignment.

i have seen this a with vehicles with these trensioners, some garages seem to miss this,

i i've ended up attending them as a breakdown a few weeks later
