Custom Leather

As I am getitng my new IQ in a few weeks, and I have to keep the costs down, I have gone for the base model with no extras but hopefully I will add bits to make it more individual

Once thing I have seen is the plum leather seating under accessories, for #591 so I assume it can be fitted at a later date - would this also be possible with the custom leather as I think the black and orange seats would be a nice thing to add to my car (when funding permits)

I dont think you can buy the other colour leather as after market, as in they need to be ordered at time or order. I could be wrong though.

I have been told the same by a local dealer, the leather is fitted only at time of landing in the UK and as yet Toyota can't offer it after delivery.

Surely if it is fitted at the point the car gets into the UK then it must be possible to get it - mind you, depending on price, I guess can always get the car re-trimmed - maybe a nice alcantera for the dash too?

Hi

I can tell you i bought the plum leather kit and fitted it myself. It is quite difficult as you do need to borrow some stretching tools to get the clips together and also it is glued on top of the existing cover. The item is made in Greece

Oh right so the plum leather is put on ontop of the existing fabric? Is the custom leather done the same way - guessing it is if it is done in the UK or they would not be able to complete the car in the factory

When I've had some of my cars done in the past, the guy removes the original seat cover and uses it to make the template for the new leather/alcantara. I'm planning to get me iQ done later in the year.

Not sure how effective the air bag will be if it has to burst through two layers of fabric???

Loving those MX5 seats with the leather and suede

There must be weak spots designed into the cover. If someone is making new covers I'd be leaving the car with them, so they can see where the bags are.

I just wish there was something that could be done about the seat base! Nipping around town can be a nightmare due to no side support. :( Here's hoping they fix this in the new model.

Where are the airbags in the iQ seats? Are they just in the side of the uprights or is there one in the base of the seat too?

If there are none in the base then it would be easy to change the foam and shape the seat...

There's talk of a model 'refresh' later this year, how true I dont know.

*Edited* There are no bags in the base.

The iQ seat coveres are glued to hard polysyrene and if you tru to remove it to put the plum leather ones on it tears. Its very thin. Also i contacted Toyota's plum after market manufacturers in Greece and they said the iQ is the only one they do for Toyota that the original cover stays on and they fit theirs on top which is what i did. Hope this helps

My iQ is in R&D for seat covers right now. They had it for a week and this week will make two. They said that the design of the seat makes it very difficult to fit a cover and have it tight. I'll let you know how the progress goes.

Anyone know where I could get the door cards and dash re-trimmed in alcantera

I thought about getting the dash and part of the doors done with flock, just waiting for a quote to come back from a local supplier. I'm just concerned that the inside of the car may end up looking like a "fuzzy felt" I used to have when I was a kid....

Are you going to have the shapes to stick randomly on it too then? LOL

Paul, there is a place in Bromley that *MIGHT* be able to do it, but not 100% if they could or not.

Cass Brothers on Hastings Road. I know they do a lot of work for the local Merc/BMW dealers.

You should remove existing covers before fitting plumb leather. I have done it, it takes time. If the existing covers are left in place it comprimises the air bags and is dangerous

Not sure what the quotes were but when i fitted the plum covers in my iQ , i bought the kit from Toyota and spoke to the manufacturers in Greece about fitting. They said that the iQ is one of the only cars where the original covers do not come off before fitting. If you look at your seats you will see the fabric is very thin and is glued to the hard foam and when you try to remove the cover it starts to break up the foam moulding. Also fitting the leather you have to glue it on to the existing seat cover especially the area under the headrest otherwise it will sag and look like a drum cover. You need upholstery tools to fit it for stretching it on because it clips together underneath.
