When you say you just had it re-gassed, do you mean with a proper air-con machine that checks for leaks by seeing if it will hold a vacuum before filling?

If so then assuming the system is charged it will most likely be the compressor, a quick test with a 12v lamp to the terminal on the compressor will see if power is getting that far.

No idea on price, but I would expect a new one to be several hundred pounds, most motor factors do a exchange system for a lot less.

You will need to get the system de-gassed again before working on it.

I think tha compressor of the aircon or it needs more freon.

Not sure if all Auris are the same, but on my Auris with climate control I do not hear the compressor engage because it doesn't use a magnetic clutch - it is of newer variable load type.

It will be a swashplate compressor which are becoming more common, supposed to be "greener". You should still hear it "load" and "unload" though depending on ambient conditions and how hard it has to work. I find them less efficient than the "older" clutch driven units.

I have the A/C on ALL the time so dont notice any change in engine loads.

It could just be a clutch fault on older cars and this can be repaired. Try the AIRCON specialists as MR T can fix it but probably will want to replace the whole unit.

When you say 'clutch fault', is this because it is in someway connected to the clutch?

My aircon is behaving strangely. If I turn it off completely - fine. When I turn it on again, the 'air recirculation' button comes on too. If I notice this straightaway I turn the air recycler button off again. But sometimes I don't notice it is on until the passenger door window starts to steam up (by this time I also tend to find I have a headache). As soon as I notice this button is on, I turn it off again before I get drowsy.

It's annoying but this afternoon the recycler button came on even when I turned the aircon off.

What happened was -

First I turned 'Aircon' on. Had to turn 'Recyc' off because it came on all by itself.

Turned 'Auto' on. Had to turn 'Recyc' off again.

Turned both off. 'Recyc' remained off - for a while.

Drove, say half a mile or so. Glanced down, the 'Recyc' button was on again! Hadn't touched anything. It was just on again.

Turned it off. It came on again. Both 'Aircon' and 'Auto' are both still off.

Fiddled around with both the aforementioned buttons. Finally managed to get all three to stay off. Also managed to avoid hitting the car in front, by the way.

I can't find my handbook so it's hard to say if it's me doing something wrong. However, I daren't touch the thing now in case I inadvertently make the sod switch on again and I fall asleep at the wheel, if you know hat I mean.

Anyway, I also note I hear a loud grinding noise from my clutch when I reverse into my garage. There is a small lip between my forecourt and my garage floor that means my Auris needs to climb up about .5 cm. If I don't get enough revs (or come off the revs too soon) the cars won't mount the lips and ends up rolling in the opposite direction at quite a pace. When I rev up to about 1200 rpm to have enough power then slip the clutch to overcome the lip, I hear a metallic grinding noise - until I dip the clutch.

I wonder if the two are connected? Okay I think it unlikely but my dealer can't replicate the noise when they have the vehicle (and neither can i when I'm there).

So it has been left to 'fix when it fails'.

yes the car was regassed ,ie hooked up to a machine vacuum and gas

You need to get it checked to see if it is leaking, no good re-gassing if it leaks

The system needs to have a dye injected into it, the dye can be seen under UV light and establish where it is leaking from

As for not hearing the clutch kick in (Older AC compressors had an electro magnetic clutch-nothing to do the the transmission clutch) you won't, modern compressors don't have that type of compressor

Then you have to ask yourself why isnt it working?

If I had taken my car in to be re-gassed because it wasnt working, and it came out not working I would want to know why

Do they not check the work done? We give a before AND after reading so you can see the result of having an A/C service

Surely you should at least go back and ask why it is not blowing cold?

Sounds like the pressure valve faulty . On the newer type a/c systems the only thing that u will hear different is the cooling fan comming on when the a/c turned on
