I have a 2litre disel avensis estate, I want to have a tow bar fitted. Any suggestions on which tow bars are more suitable and how much will the car pull. I have read the manual, but it is not very clear....

You will find that the pre 2009 model has a lower maximum towing limit than the latest model (1300kg if memory serves me correctly?) although as the engines are the same I would anticipate actual towing up to the limit would be very good. If you look at the Caravan Club website there is a car / caravan matching module which should give you a good guide as to the safety and performance of the combination you propose.

Look at the VIN plate it has the gross train weight front axel weight rear axel weight and car weight subtract the car weight from the train weight and you have the maximum trailer weight, this varies with engine type and year, the pre 2009 was 1300 and after 2009 1600 for the 2.00 diesel.

Your max towing weight for that car is 500kg unbreaked or 1300kb breaked according to the specs on Toyota's website.

My car has a witter towbar fitted and that seems fine.
