Whats The Difference Between The 136 And 150 Bhp Engine 4.3?

Whats the difference between the 136 and 150 bhp engine 4.3?

Is it ECU mapping and turbo? I do wonder if it's just those two factors as the T180is a 2.2 and I wondered if they just turned the map up and stuck a bigger turbo on.

Anyone know?

PS if that is the case Charlie I'll also have your turbo and ECU off you ;)

It is just that Mate.. The later 150 engine some say is different.. Toyota GB say all the 2.2 Diesels are the same lump with only ECUs and egine mapping plus fuel injectors are the difference..

Certainly say a 2006 car the lump itself is the same...

The main difference in the hardware is the block which has now got large breather holes to reduce pumping losses and the pistons which are redesigned to reduce emmissions (they may be very similar to current 3/4 engines as they have been upgraded). The balance shafts are improved.

The cooling system around the also new EGR is completely revised. All engines now have piezo injection and a different fuel rail. The diesel throttle body has been changed too.

As Charlie says, many items carry over from the old engine but if you look under the bonnet you would think they are two completely different engines even to look at.

What about the difference between the 180 and 136? Is that just mapping?

No, the compression ratio is different for a start, as is the high pressure fuel rail (common rail), plus other stuff.

Damn so no reflashing upgrade then lol

It is not possible to flash tune the Denso ECU fitted to the Rav Mate as no one has managed to crack it....

Tuning for power or economy can only be done with a piggyback box like the Lindop one...

The Lindop box is worth every penny especially if You are doing the miles !! Apart from the extra performance its the smooth stepless way the power is delivered , An all together far better vehicle to drive..

I do or did not drive any differently though or perhaps I should say I don't drive silly fast or race away from the lights.. Its the extra torque and the overtaking ability that is the big gain and less down changing up hills ect....

Plus if You sell the car simply unhook the kit in minutes and sell it separately...

It will add some more stress on the engine but so will thrashing the one you've got. I doubt the engine will take much harm but think on it will use more fuel if you push it and you should really tell the insurance company.

Difference between the 180 and 136 is in some things (2007 year). These I found... First turbo: 180 have IHI VB13, 136 have IHI VB14. Second fuel injectors: 180 piezoelectric, 136 no piezo. Third fuel rail and pump: 180 have 5th injector which goes to DPF to reduce emissions, and the pump is different because of that, and fuel rails of course. Fourth: cylinder head cover (not the head just cover because of different injectors on 180). Fifth: glow plugs. Sixth: all engine wiring harness because of different fuel system (maybe it could be fited to 136 wiring but its a very hard job, need some new fuses, releys etc). And I think there are more like ECU and DPF and maybe something more... I read technical specifications of both engines and in term of measures or tolerances they are mechanicaly the same. The same block, cylinders, cylinder head, intercooler, radiator, EGR... If someone know anything else please write :) PS sry for my bad english I'm international member :)))

Just as a quick an dirty upgrade and throwing all the ideas of engine longetivity out the window, i.e not giving a toss about refining bits like dpf and ignoring the obvious catalogue of fault codes that would follow. Obviously you could change the bore and stroke but thats a big ball ache of a job.

You will give the engine between 20 and 25% more power so there has to be extra stress, that goes hand in hand with the power, however, the extra power means you dont have to drive the car as hard, the power delivery is much smoother. If you drive it like you stole it, then you do have to consider the effect on the clutch, normal driving will be no problem.

I think its not, just find second hand parts... My calculation is about 1000 euros, with parts from 30000 miles RAV4 D-CAT 180...

I don't know, but if I do that I'm gonna change everything it is needed... First of all you need to change fuel pump because of different flow rate, and that pump have rail to dpf so its complicated to not change everything. And common rail have diferent wiring so you need to change all wiring just to work... In my opinion that engine wont work if you do not change everything is needed.

I'd have thought that the parts themselves weren't the big issue as long as you have a comprehensive list of what you need (including all the consumable bits like fasteners, clips, etc. that won't go back on or have to be destroyed to remove from the donor parts). When you add in your time to do it, downtime of your car off-road, it could prove costly - hence my suggestion to change the car.

Admittedly I've done my share of engine, g/box, suspension transplants in the past (grew up with old Fords - Escorts, Capris & Cortinas) so I can understand the attraction of doing this, especially if you're a bit of a petrolhead & get a buzz from it. However the problem that I would see with modern cars is the amount of electronics and software involved which can turn into a whole world of grief unless you have expert knowledge of how the systems all work with each other; these systems are only plug & play when they're new and done in the factory. It's one thing getting the EMS wrong and then trying to sort out a mis-fire or an EML that won't turn off but what about systems like traction control or ABS which are often an intrinsic part of the overall vehicle systems suite and could prove fatal out on the road if you don't get them exactly right?

Sorry if I sound overly-pessimistic or if you're an experienced software engineer. Good luck with it if you go ahead.

You are right. Thats the reason I dubt of doing that... Maybe I will do that upgrade when the car be very cheap and old, or when I have money to spend on that lets say "experiment". But 180hp + tunung box=205hp and I have just 136 :(( If I do that I will post the proces and all parts changed :)
