Hi I have a 2005 Rav 4 XTR diesel Silver, with standard alloy wheels, one of the wheels the paint is starting to peel off I have shown the wheel to a company to have it refurbished they asked if I knew the colour code I said I would ask the best forum for Toyota Rav 4s. Would there be anywhere on the car to get the code for the wheels.appreciate any help Robert.

There is no colour code for the wheels, the best option would be to go to an auto paint specialist and match the colour to a "colour swatch"

.....or get two done, and keep them to one side of the car.....?

What with this thread and the Cumbrialass one, makes you think that some how Toyota had a lousy wheel supplier on the 4.2 model.Don,t think we have ever had a moan about 4.3 wheels needing new paint or paint peeling.

Not accurate for once, Oor Clara....even I had two replaced under warranty for paint pitting / premature corrodalising. It was really quite common for a while, but reports thereof seem to have died a death, probably mainly due to all being well out of warranty by now.

Big Kev....washed my car today in preparation for first potential viewer.....like a new pin.

Try Toyota paint code 1F7. You can't go wrong with Classic Silver!

Hi Clare,

I don't know why but Jap wheels seem to be, well...crap really. My Mazda's had to be replaced under warranty, those on my LC4 always looked a bit less robust finish-wise than the rest of the car and the wheels on both our RAV's had to be refurbed last year as they were getting in an awful state.

Conversely I cannot recall any wheel issues with any Euro boxes: BMW, Ford, Rover, GM, etc.

Admittedly my 55-reg Granite's alloys were fine. But then I only had it for 6 months.

My father inlaw has had 3 alloys replaced on his 1 year old land cruiser and I've had two done on mine. Maybe it's to do with the length of time spent at sea!

My 4.2 wheels are in a sorry state too. I was thinking about ditching the standard 16 inchers and replacing them with an aftermarket set. Can anybody tell me what bolt pattern (pcd?) and offset I need?

alloys became popular in the early noughties, but they could never stand the harshness of harshness of the British weather, particularly because of the amount of salt we put on our roads compared to other countries

The problem lay with insufficient protection coatings, thin layers of lacquer or paint, but there is also a natural thing going on in the background which only made the situation far worse

Once the initial lacquer has been breached, something as tiny as a stone chip is enough, then a natural process called galvanic corrosion starts to occur. This process is accelerated by the tons of salt we dump on the roads each year and what happens is the salt gets behind any sort of breach in the lacquer. Salt is an electrolyte when wet and this sets off a small electrical current which combines with the salt and alloy and this produces a form of corrosion on the alloy wheel. This corrosion eventually causes the wheel to leak air. It is not just Toyota that have this problem, lots of Japanese manufacturers AND European manufacturers suffered from it. Of course owners need to take some responsibility too. Leaving the winter crud on your wheels all winter is a recipe for disaster, they should be cleaned off regularly, and if you do have any sort of damage to the wheel, a scuff on a kerb and the like, then get it repaired as it will only be a matter of time before the alloy corrodes

I think the Rx300 wheels will fit and look rather good too.
