Alternator Info - P/s Issues

Hi there - hopefully some kind person can help....

Alternator seems to have packed-in, would anyone know the part number so I can get one ordered. Any recommendations on best place to source items.

It's a 53 plate 2 ltr, D-4D.

Will change belt too, so again part number would be useful.

If anyone has changed these themself, grateful for any tips or an idea of how easy/difficult, special tools (if any) requird etc.

Btw, Power Steering fails Intermittently,(Dash waring light flashing continuously) I cant see the pump nor reservoir, its not on the drivers side next to belts. So wondering

1. Is the car fitted with an electic pump -(would have thought car was too early for that)

2. Is a possible symtom of the alternator not providing enough charge (if electric pump)

Many thanks

david

Hi,

The steering on 02 onwards models is electric, just look at the sterring column under the dash and you will see the housing around the column / motor.

No idea of the alternator part no. but the Haynes manual says they could be Denso or Bosch, no mention that the diesel has a more powerful version as some cars sometimes do.

Any good parts store should soon tell you the corect model to use.

How have you established the alternator is faulty ?

Have you check that the main charging fuses are not blown ?

Are you seeing any voltage increase across the Battery when you rev the engine ?

Charged Battery last night and charge seems to have held - put bat back in car and started then put meter over the terminals - the voltage was less - fuse all ok - was looking at prices online and seem to vary quite a bit hence the reason for the part number - also considering looking locally (edinburgh) for someone to recondition.

Thank for the reply...

Hi,

Two things - if you have a charged Battery unconnected it will show, lets say 12.4v, on the car and just ticking over it could just show a bit less, but if you rev to a steady-ish 2K + then you should see something like 14V across the Battery, that shows th alternator is working ok.

Similarly, if you set the car running, switch on the headlights and then rev the engine they should brighten up noticably if the alternator is working.

Is it the orginal Battery - if so its likely shot anyway - batteries like that can show all sorts of stange problems, it could be almost shorting out the alternator - have you tried anither other battery in it

The part number is really Toyotas, to get one elsewhere you will have to look on the alternator itself to find out its make and model number.

See if you have a Bosch or Denso repair centre in your area or enquire at some Motor Factors in your area , they may have a trade repairer they use or recommend - find them listed in Yellow Pages

Hi,

As it says further down that advert you need to take off your existing one and check its type and number matches their list otherwise you could be wasting your money.

Perhaps they might offer a repair service instead ?

Can't help with part numbers but a very quick test is switch the car on then pull the red terminal off the Battery whilst the engine is still running. If the engine stalls it is deffo your alternator. if it doesn't stall then it is not your alternator. Simples.
