Gears Not Engaging In D Or R When Car Is Cold..and When First Started

Hi Guys, I am new an bought ma first Carina.. a 1.8cc 16v 1994 model. Automatic trans with ect(pwr)and ECT(man). I am having this issue where the gears D and R will not engage when I first start the car...I have to throttle past 2000rpm for a while where the car will jump and is okay when its hot.. Can this issue be rapired by replacing parts in gearbox ? or do I need to replace gearbox.. Pls advice me.. thanks Chinth
