Aftermarket Head Unit With Factory Dvd?

I've just bought a 2005 Corolla Verso with the factory DVD in the back for the kids, and I'd like to swap the woeful factory head unit for something better. First off, will that mess up the dvd set up, and secondly are there outputs on the dvd unit that could be run into the head unit to get the sound through the car's Speakers? Two of my kids are under 2, so they're not going to keep the headphones on.
