I get 31 mpg out of 2004 Corolla T3

I never go above 60mph other then to get past someone doing 30mph maybe

I do a 15 mile journey to work then back so it isn't short distances

I've noticed the choke seems to stay on for a long time and once off the revs drop to approx 500rpm where it's hesitant

I haven't looked for an air leak but its been serviced regularly, I guess it comes down to trusting a garage when they do work, but then I guess it's not an mot failure lol
