Guys , I have 2001 Hilux surf with a 1KZ engine and 4wd transmission. whenever the vehicle comes to a stop. The transmission will ***** back into 1st gear. There is no smooth gear down.

What can be the problem here?

Most problems with auto boxes are a lack of maintenance, I would check the fluid level and see what it looks like. It should be up to the level mark and a nice red colour, it is not worth looking for other problems until you eliminate the oil so best changing it to start off with

Recently change the fluids, drain out the converter also., I put in original toyota transmission fluid. the level is good and the colour is good.

Then I fear you are out of DIY territory and need to seek advice from a specialist auto transmission expert. Try posting up on the Hilux Pickup OC site, you might come across a cause on there

check with:

- solenoid control valves;

I have a 94 3.0TD surf 1kz. the auto trans used to change gears smoothly @ around 2 & 1/2 RPM in each gear. now it moves from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd at around 3 & 1/4 and I have lost Over drive. I have checked the trans fluid, it's bright red and at the correct level. no earthing straps have been moved for any other work and there is no flash code from any of the dash lights. the issue occured about two days ago and only today have I lost O/D. what do you reckon??

As per post number 4. If the oil is good and up to the level, then as a DIY you do not have many options, you need to run some pressure tests. Take it to a specialist auto transmission company for further investigation

before I commit hundreds of dollars to have a diagnosis by a specialist I might try a trans fluid change. What trans fluid do these models take? how many Litres? and how hard is it?

Right, after making some calls this is what I have learnt. These wagons' auto trans change gear most effectively when the engine is warm...so, I was told to check the main thermostat to ensure my vehicle is heating to where it normally does, it does.

The next little gem was that maybe the temp sensor from the auto trans was loose or disconnected, tried to look but I don't know which of the 4 plugs is the one.

Off to the mechanic Friday, will let you know what the problem was, how it was fixed and what it cost. not sure how the pricing will translate from a New Zealand economy to a UK economy but ball park stuff may help someone.

I have been doing some home work prior to my visit with my mechanic. Known causes for these issues are listed below, the remedy costs are based on the NZ dollar($1= £0.53). To put things into context, Diesel is $1.59/L($95 to fill my Surf), Mechanics charge $60/hr plus 15% tax and a second hand auto trans for my 94 Surf cost $2000 plus labour.

Causes Remedy cost

Buggered thermostat - $20 + fitting

Bad temp sensor or sensor conection - $100 + fitting

Low/old Trans fluid - $110 for fluid

Stuffed ECU - $600 + fitting

Bad earthing - trained eye

wear and tare - $300 for service or $2000 to replace

Hi I have a 96 Toyota surf kn185 I've just started having problems with my transmission sometimes pulling away from a stop sign or traffic lights I'll put my foot down to take off and the rev counter will go up to 2500 rev then all of a sudden click in to gear then takes off its like it  neutralises it self I've changed transmission filter and transmission fluid twice in the last 6 months i flushed transmission both times and oil was still nice and red and didn't have a burnt smell to it i also cleaned sump pan and there was hurdle any steel on the magnetics. Iv done stall test on it (put it in to drive and applied the gas while holding my foot on the brake and it will skid the back wheels with no problems at all) so if anyone has any ideas I'd like to here them cheers
