Ice Problem.....

Hi all,

I took my car to the only local ice specialist that i know of in my area, i took it in beacuse the door Speakers were dodgy, the passenger side didn't work at all and the drivers side would work if you opened and closed the door a few times, so, i asked them to replace the wires from the amp to each door speaker (i have the 7 active speaker system) the rear Speakers and tweeters were fine. when i picked it up i just put the radio on for a second to see it had been done and as expected there was sound from all the Speakers :) I got home and had a proper play with it and noticed it actually sounded a bit crap so i started to mess with the balance controll on the stereo, it worked properly left to right but when i tried front to back i noticed the was no sound when front were selected and sound from all the speakers when back was selected, as far as i'm aware the back was mid range speakers so it looks to me like they've just ran a cable from each back speaker to the front :ffs: . does this sound about right? and would that explain why the sound is a bit pants? should i take the car back to them again because it took them 7 hours to make that ***** up?

any advice apreciated and sorry for the long winge!!

Sounds like they have wired all Speakers in together, from the amps that feed the rear. Yes this will sound bad, since the rear amps are being asked to power twice as many Speakers. The standard amps are not particularly powerful in the first place.

This may have been done because the front amps have had it. However, they would have been better off calling you first, telling you this, then perhaps offering a replacement?

As Jimlad says go back and see them, I hope they haven't charged you too much for this, since it really shouldn't take 7 hours to do, I reckon I could do that in 2 at the most!

Hi,

I took it to 'Max-In-Car systems' in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent. They originally quoted me 2 hours at £35ph so thats all i paid. I'm deffo going to take it back cause the radio keeps switching itself off when it gets a bit loud. will keep you all posted.

its defo wired up wrong then

they will have wired up the front and rears on the same channel cos if its cuttin out as you turn it up the amp is overloaded and is therefore activating the protection circuits.

Yep - something is shorting out one of the outputs, possible accidentally grounding to earty due to careles wiring.

Hi,

Does anybody have a little diagram of where all the Speakers and the amps are on the 7 speaker system so i can go back to the shop and have a go at explaining what they did wrong? i think it's on them manuals you get on cd but i dont have one so i cant look.

Cheers for any help

Hi,

Just got my 2 back from the return visit to 'max in-car systems', it all works fine now!

Not very loud though are they the stock amps  can they be replaced with more powerful amps of a similar size?

Yep the stock amps are pretty pants, better to go buy an aftermarket upgrade. looking in Halfords the other day, and decent amps can be had for the £150 mark. Considering Halfords are overpriced, I suspect you can find the same stuf on line for much less. This will be my next upgrade.....
