Corolla Engine Cuts Out

So I have a K reg Corolla 1.6 automatic. Perfect car, never had any problems with it. Until last week. The car starts but then a few seconds later the engine cuts out. The only way i can get the car started properly is by starting the car and putting my foot on the gas and rev it a good few times. After that it seems to work fine. Should i take it to a mechanic or is this a small issue that can be fixed at home?
