Water Pump And Coolant Questions (2005 Corolla)

The water pump of my 2005 Corolla leaks slowly. I would like to replace it.

To avoid coolant spill, I think I need to drain the coolant. Is draining from the radiator good enough? shall I drain from the engine block drain? My purpose is not to flush the coolant, just to avoid getting messy when I take off the water pump. How many liters of coolant is required for refilling in such a case?

Radiator would suffice as the bottom of the radiator should be low enough to drain the system

Hi,

One question you need to answer - what antifreeze have you got in now ?

Is it the original pink Toyota long life stuff or more standard blue ones ?

If your cars never had an antifreeze change, perhaps now if a good time to drain the whole lot and use all new ..

Some might also suggest flushing the heater matrix out as well as it seems matrix blockages are a problem many 2002 cars suffer from.If using concentrate antifreeze solution use deionised water to dilute it with, if your local water is hard

Thanks to Steve and oldcodger for the quick replies.

My car is using the original pink (SLLC) coolant. I would prabably buy the same coolant from the dealer, because I don't know which coolant is the same formula and if they will react to each other when mixing.

I don't know where the heater matrix and how to flush it. Any more information?

After I replaced the water pump, the car shakes when I stop on traffic lights. What can be wrong? I have checked the coolant level and the temperature, all were fine.

Hi,

Did you disconnect the Battery when replacing the water pump ?

If so, it could be the ECU re-learning, I had a similar problem when I replaced the Battery.

The tickover is all over the place, watch the rev meter.

After about 30 mins it usually corrects itself.
