Help With Yaris Engine Management Light

Hi everyone! Ive just joined as I have recently bought a 2004 Yaris. I test drove the car and the engine management light came on after a few miles, i told the sales person and he said it would be fixed before i collected it. On collection 3 days later the light was off and so i bought the car only to again drive a few miles and the light come back on. I took the car back for them to fix and the same happened again. I then took it to my own garage who couldnt find a fault and said it would need to go to a Toyota specialist to find the fault. I relayed the information back to the sales company who again took the car in to fix. This time they had the car for 6 days, telling me it would be done the next day then never hearing anything until i rang. I got told it was the engine timing and they are replacing the chain. This went on all weekend until yesterday i got told they had ordered the wrong part (which id previously been told they were changing a few days before) and were waiting for replacement. Finally today I got it back after a week of hassle, the light isnt on but even when starting the car the light doesn't show? I think they may have disconnected the light somehow or removed the bulb, is this possible? And if so does anyone have any advice on what action i can take? I have asked numerous times for a courtesy car and asked for compensation as i was put out of work for a few days with no transport but got told for both of them they could not help me.

Did they give you any paperwork to prove they have replaced the chain?

The light should come on when you switch the ignition on and go off as you start the car, if it is not there it sounds like someone has pulled the bulb out, very dishonest.

Whoever they are are a bunch of cowboys. The fact the light came on during your test drive should have rung alarm bells. They'd obviously just turned it off and hoped you wouldn't notice. If anything you should have got your garage to find out what the error code was, then you'd know if they were telling the truth about the timing chain. Regardless, they obviously couldn't be bothered to address whatever the code related to so they just took the bulb out, which is of course, nothing short of despicable.

You should probably contact trading standards or post something up on money saving expert motoring forum - they'll give you some advice. You have certain rights when buying from a dealer.

Have a look at the website of 'Honest John' www. honestjohn.co.uk He writes for the Daily Telegraph. Plenty of information about your rights when buying a car. You may well have good grounds for rejecting the car and demanding your money back. Trading Standards are another port of call.

Thank you for all your advice. Ive had the car ino a toyota dealerhip and theyve checked everything over. The bulb was removed and theyre currently running a diagnostic on it. Next to trading standards! Should have ran when the engine light came on to start with! Luckily its all logged with citizans advice :) thank you all again

Good grief, I can't believe they actually tried the old 'take-out-the-bulb' trick in this day and age

Can we name and shame these guys? With that level of dishonesty they deserve to be put out of business!
