T180 - If Things Can't Get Any Worse...... Exhaust £1100

I checked with a local exhaust supplier and they can get the rear pipe & box for around £150 and they told me that the massive middle part was main stealer only.

So the factor selling a tin can of a tail pipe that will last one year and a day will sell you a tail pipe for £150 and the main dealer 3 year warranty part is is £161........hardly "stealer" prices ;)

John its amazing that the front section costs so much yet the back section is reasonable ?? Can it all be down to that blooming cat ??

John, I wasn't referring to the cost of the back box as that is a good main dealer price with that guarantee. It was more the point that the local exhaust place told me the main centre section is main dealer only which then makes it a main stealer price as us as customers don't have any option except to pay whatever Toyota decide is the going rate which in this instance is a lot!

I'm absolutely amazed that with modern technology as advanced as it is that a part of an exhaust costs this much. At the end of the day we are driving a Toyota not a Ferrari.

This isn't a dig at you John, just frustration that what is essentially a piece of pipe with a catalyst inside it costs this much.

I think these aftermarket manufacturers start to make production runs at about this age (6-7 years). Not much point making a production run if they are going to sit in their warehouse. However, I hope they will press the go button soon. It looks like they may be starting to kick off.

Just taken it to a friend who is a mechanic in the army - was looking to take it to the barracks and weld it back . Unfortunately it has broken off too close to the middle box ! Off to an exhaust specialist tomorrow who hopefully will be able to fix it ! I guess its coming up to 70k and is 2006, its a pity that nothing to do with the T180 is standard !! If it was a VW I would be fine ! I have new Geolander tyres, I am getting the engine sorted at Toyota re head gasket and now I'm getting a new exhaust.......does anyone know anything else that could go wrong ?? Should I part ex or should I keep ? I'm thinking the satellite/ audio system or something will go wrong next ! Any advice appreciated , Thank you

Once the engine is sorted the car should be all good..The exhaust I know from experience is a very costly job but the reality is like my car the cars are near t 7 years old now and like many cars they cost a lot of money to maintain..

Stella only you can decide ? New tyres and exhaust and a new engine means you bills should hopefully be low for some time but again taking a reality check We You or I just cant know what is round the corner but at least with your car you know the dice is loaded in your favour..... Plus you have spent a lot on tyres ect ect so maybe you should at least get some return ??

It is I think pretty rare for satelite / Audio systems in these cars to give trouble !

Welding up the existing exhaust is I think a waste of time as it will likely just pop somewhere else on that Huge centre box !!

Try googling and ringing Bosal exhausts.. Bosal is one of the largest manufacturer's of replacement exhausts in the country and I know they were about to start making systems for the Rav4 fairly soon...

Charlie, this is good news that Bosal are on the verge of making exhaust systems for the RAV4 as ours is rapidly approaching the same mileage as the OP's and yours although our car is slightly newer - not sure if that is going to make much difference but I'm now beginning to wonder how much longer ours is likely to last?

I will get underneath it on the weekend and have a good look to see what state it is in.

What they will make Martin is a repair kit which will consist of that huge centre box which will allow cutting off rear of the oxidisation cat and slipping on there and bolting up to the back section...

My one looked fine from the outside but like many exhausts it rusted from the inside out partly caused by the car being parked up for a few months.....

I have just discovered Bosal are only down the road from me :) , Bamber Bridge ( Preston). I shall speak with them first thing. You have really been a great help - Thank you

Yes I know that Martin, none taken

It's just often the dealer is called a stealer without any thought, when in fact the prices are nearly what a factor charges. It is a fact the Toyota exhaust systems last very well indeed when compared to an aftermarket exhaust. You only have to compare the weight of a genuine exhaust to an aftermarket one, its like comparing chalk and cheese. The genuine CAT contains far more precious metals than an aftermarket one, this can be borne out by the scrap value, you can get nearly double the money for a genuine CAT at the scrapyard

I'm not saying every part is on a par with the factors, price wise, but in a lot of cases (faster moving items) they can be, but one thing is for sure, the quality is nearly always better in every way

I totally agree with the quality aspect of Toyota parts  , we have nothing but OEM parts on our car and ideally would like to keep it that way.

The unfortunate thing for us is that our car needs to be on the road every day and as my wife works 35 miles away from where I work it's not as it we can car share  So, should things go wrong, and to be fair virtually nothing has to date in nigh on 40k, we would need to get in sorted straight away and ultimately pay the going rate. This is where main dealers in general have you over a barrel so to speak as you don't have any option regardless of how good the quality of the OEM part is if there are no non OEM parts available.

I wasn't aware until I read this thread that:

1) an OEM replacement exhaust costs so much &

2) there is currently no non OEM option for the exhaust

That said, I called another local exhaust supplier this morning (CES in Chester) who quoted £1,570 + VAT for the main centre section!! They also advised that this part would have to come from a main dealer!! I did ask them to double check this and they confirmed the price. D1ck Turpin springs to mind!! :gunsmilie:

So, John, I retract my above 'main stealer' comment  and am absolutely amazed at how someone is trying to add over 500 notes to something that is already an expensive part.

There you go  I used to supply CES with ALL their genuine exhausts, but I think they now get them imported from somewhere

It's a bit like the tyre situation, there is an assumption that fast fit centres must be cheaper, just because they are fast fit. We often compare the leading fast fit companies prices to our own when quoting by having their website prices displayed on the front counter PC, we nearly always beat them on price, not always, but I bet you it is 90% of the time

My advice is always get a price off your dealer and a factor before you make a decision, nothing ventured etc............

Well, a happy ending to my story ! On recommendation from a few people and yourselves mentioning stainless steel....

I visited an exhaust specialist , even handier because I could walk to work from there !

As I thought they could not weld it back to the middle box so they have made a new section.

stainless steel and a life time guarantee and even looks the biz ( the garage has been going a very long time too ).

£360 inc VAT and sorted in a day !

They also specialise in Yokohama tyres.

Well it turned out okay in the end, I really appreciate your advice and knowlede

Toyota have just agreed to pay for a new Cat on my car as I have argued it's linked to the engine problems so may be worth u arguing the same.

Replaced my T180 exhaust with MrT for the usual £1k+ with 67k on the clock and felt cheated after two 4.1's lasted more than 130k each with only the mild steel hangers needing replacing and both were sold on without replacement.

I'm interested in Kingo's comment on scrap value. Is the exhaust an exchange item or was I ripped off by Mr T? How much are we talking about in scrap value?

The cat Toyota will be replacing will be the engine cat which does not form part of the exhaust....

Quite how we can blame an exhaust rusting after 6 1/2 years service is beyond me.....

The oxidisation cat is not very big at all.. Quite small in fact so not worth very much..

Will take some photo's .......

Due to go back to Toyota on 29th to look at the engine, they did mention the cat too...

So I now have new tyres, brake discs front and rear , exhaust, been re sprayed due to prang and if I get a new engine I should have a new car.....well nearly !

I might well keep and get my money's worth !

Stella

I'm now in much the same position with a car which although has cost a fortune is a really nice car which has only disappointed in that it hasn't demonstrated the reliability, fun and build quality of the old 4.1, it's still a cracking car.

Since buying the car last year I've had the brakes, exhaust, engine all changed and got rid of the run flats.

I was always going to keep it for around 5 years and although I could have researched the fuel consumption and tyres and saved myself those surprises I am going to keep it. As Charlie says 6 years seems to be a reasonable time nowadays for the expected service items to need replacing, the engine is a bummer but the warranty is there and available if you stand your ground with Mr T.

Hope you choose to keep it!

Kenny

I know when mine went in to have the engine rebuild done due to High oil consumption (pre engine replacement days) they changed the front exhaust pipe. Not sure which part but im assuming this was because the redesigned exhaust had a larger pipe/cat
