Avensis T27 Steering Clicking Issue When Turning

Hi,

I own a Toyota Avensis T27 SW 2.0D from 2009 with 68000km with retractable column steering. I've been noticing a clicking feel in the steering wheel that occurred from time to time when cornering and turning. I referred this fact on the last scheduled maintenance and I was told that everything was ok. Does anybody else have the same "problem"? If so, did you find the origin and/or the solution for it? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Carlos

Hi Carlos,

I have the same car, produced the same year, having 65300km on the clock at the moment. I have this issue, I believe, since the car was new. I was told by various dealers and specialised garages that they cannot see anything wrong. The clicking did not "worsen" over time and mileage, but is constant and still there. Having said all this, I would appreciate if someone managed to solve this issue, to share the solution with us.

Thanks :)

One question: does the clicking occur when the turning signal is on?

Example: you want to turn left. You activate the indicator and start turning the wheel to the left. While you are turning the weel to the left a clicking noise can be heard. It stops after you start turning right and the indicator is disengaged.

Is this the scenario or the clicking is beeing heard reagardless of the turning signal activation?

No, it is not the "plastic" clicking that the indicator stalk makes :)

The best way to describe it is if someone took a small hammer and taped the steering main shaft with it while turning. Or, like there is a small "notch" on the shaft... the problem is that it doesn't happen every time you turn... I was not able to find the position or situation when it happens every time...

I can only "conclude" that it is more often in summer than in winter... (but I am not sure if this is even true)... :)

One more thing... This phenomenon is not so much heard, but felt through hands on the steering wheel...

Hi all

I also have this "problem" on my T27 from 2010, with 137000Km. It's more like a subtle clanck than a click but it's there and it seems like a loosen screw somewhere. I've also, for more than one time, said to the Toyota garage about this and they came to me saying everything is OK and couldn't find any loose screw. On my side I find it, sometimes, when I turn to left. But, as all of you said, it's not always.

It's for sure NOT the issue for which some of the Avensis were recalled due to some issues on some screws on the steering área.

In fact it would be very nice to find what is that...

****SOLVED****

Most of mechanics they don't have un idea and just open there mouth and plapla.

For this model never the rack make problems, you replace it just when you have accident.

Any way the problem was the screws underside cross member and steering rack was rusty and when you try turn them right just stay were they was.

The last mechanic correct turn the screws left spray them anti rust wynn's and tight them all.

If you don't do this and try tight them they will not turn.

After the mechanic finish it the car was fine

Sorry for my English guys

I have noticed a slight knock feeling through the steering wheel once in a while. It only happens when turning left at junctions, when I come to a halt at give way lines then move off again. It is slow to moderate speeds and not every time. The knock is very gentle through the steering, but no sound. I am sure the feeling occured since the clutch was replaced a year ago, and cannot remember it happening before. MOT did not pick up anything, and the steering rack and joints have no play.

Now you mention the cross member, I will check under the car when I have a chance and make sure all the bolts are secure.

I'll also give it a look. Sometimes I also have, almost since the beginning, a rattle on the left suspension. No one, at Toyota, found anything wrong. Just as they couldn't find anything wrong regarding the sound I ear sometines when turning left. It can be a loose plastic part,,, So let's jack lift the Avensis :-)

Tomorrow will be a nice day to do it - it's holiday here in Portugal. :-)

Hello guys,

Did you resolve the problem? Mine started to do that after a wheel realignment.

Where should I look for the clank.

Thank you!

I have not checked the cross member, but there has hardly been any knocking either. What ever the feeling was, I haven't noticed it. Car drives fine and pass the MOT back in March this year, with tyres tread getting close to limit in a few thousand miles. Tyres were replaced in August.

If anything shows up, I will post.
