Landcruiser Lc4 D-4D Injector/ Piston Problem Advice Needed!

Hi, I'm new to this forum and was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice about my LC4 D4D. It's a 2004 3.0 D4D with 112000 miles, full toyota history till 100000 then 2 independant services since.

Basically the vehicle started running very roughly and lacking in power. Cylinder head has been removed and number 2 and 3 injectors have been letting by quite badly and were all carboned up, still on copper washers? Once the head was off number 4 piston has got a hole in it, hence problem I guess, also oil pick up strainer is a bit gummed up as sounds common.

I was wondering what others thought my chances were with Toyota?? I appreciate it's over 5 years and 100k but has anyone had any joy in similar circumstances since it seems such a common fault?? I had a 3.0 Isuzu Trooper and had injectors replaced under recall on an 10 year old one FOC? I would be really grateful for any help so I can go to Toyota armed with some info?? Failing that I can get the work done but it sounds like it needs a new set of injectors too and these seem pretty expensive unless anyone knows of a good source of recon ones??

Toyota did recall L/Cruisers for faulty injector seals, have you had this done on your LC?

Neil you can only try, go to the Toyota dealer and ask their advice, they do have a `secret warranty` but its up to Toyota if yours fits the perameters so also contact their customer services.

Neil - I suggest we keep in touch!! I have just had a similar problem with an 05 LC4. Cut out whilst driving about 10 days ago. Started up - but firing on 3 cylinders and knocking noise from engine. Got it recovered to garage who are now wondering what the problem is! Now firing on 4 cylinders but still a knocking noise. Like you, I have done research on the web and seen similar problems about injector seals failing. Mine has a full service history and has done about 80k miles.

The garage will start to strip from the top but, if the problem is related to seals, then I am going to try and have a go at Toyota because it seems some of these were indeed recalled. It seems stupid to recall some and not others when this is a known problem.

I will contact you again when I hear more from my garage about the cause and remedy.

Please let me know your progress.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I have been in to local Toyota agent and had a chat, the service/warranty man was quite helpful and had a phone round but unfortunately there is apparently a limit of 7 years on major problems as far as warranty goes?

I hope you have more luck with yours Howard, it turns out mine is due the recall which is to: Check and clean injectors, check oil pick up strainer. I would think yours has done similar to mine, if the garage take the rocker cover off and remove the injectors, they'll probably find at least 1 injector all carboned up where the copper washer at the bottom of the injector has failed, the carbon then gets into the oil and finds it way to the oil strainer in the bottom of the sump where it blocks it and causes a loss of oil flow which will eventually cause crankshaft bearings and/or turbo to fail. The oil strainer is easy to check, just drain the engine oil and remove the small tin sump that the drain plug screws into, the strainer is then in front of you and can be easily checked and cleaned. Best of luck with it and toyota UK, let me know how it goes and if I can be of any more help!

Neil - I too have drawn a blank so far with Toyota GB. But - I have not given up and wrote a letter of complaint yesterday to the President in the UK.

These vehicles were subject to a Customer Satisfaction Campaign in late 2011 to check the oil pick up filter for blockage and to replace the injector copper seals with aluminium ones. Such notifications only went through the dealer network so you and I never got to hear about it.

Having researched the subject in detail it seems that some countries (Canada) commit to send owners notification of Customer Satisfaction Campaigns. In addition I have just seen the Toyota Europe Campaign instruction which states "owners of the involved vehicles will receive a campaign notification by first class mail". So I will be asking why this did not happen if Toyota continue to say no........

How much has yours cost to have repaired????

You are correct there is a campaign in place to check injector seals on some Land Cruisers but not all of them if you PM your chassis number I can check too see if your is affected.

As for getting a letter, when an issue such as this is identified by Toyota they obviously investigate as to the cause and then work out an appropriate repair this is then reported to VOSA who investigate and decide if a recall is needed. In the case of the Land cruiser seal failure VOSA did not instigate a recall, if they had Toyota could have approached the DVLA to get the latest owners information and then mailed customers.

As VOSA did not issue a recall Toyota decided to start a Customer satisfaction campaign instead but because it is not a recall the DVLA will not provide the latest owners information, Toyota can then only use their own recorded info and that of their dealers which can be years and many owners out of date which may be why if your LC is subject to the modification you did not receive any contact.

Thanks - interestinly Toyota Customer Relations and the Toyota dealer agree my vehicle falls within the campaign but when I used the Toyota online checker, it identified my vehicle correctly but then advised there was no outstanding recall or campaign! Looking at the DVLA website it says they will divulge details if there is a reasonable request. I will check next week but would have thought a campaign for vehicle repair would be regarded as reasonable.................

I'm sorry to hear you're having such trouble with yours Howard, it sounds like yours might have done a bit more damage than mine, Have the garage taken the cylinder head off yet? That should reveal the problem, mine had blown a hole through the top of the piston but luckily the cylinder wasn't damaged. It was also still running on 3 cylinders and making some strange noises. I managed to remove the No.4 piston without removing the engine and replaced the piston. It would be interesting if yours has failed on the same cylinder, I imagine it has as this is the furthest cylinder from the oil pump and the problem very likely stems from lack of oil flow due to the seal problem.

I used to be a mechanic so luckily have managed to repair it myself and the parts were fairly reasonable from Milner but I expect it would have cost about 1000 as a job. It's back and running now luckily just not sure if I want to keep it now!

Coincidentally a friend of mine has an 05 LC4 that smokes when first started if he leaves it parked overnight on his driveway that is on a slope. I told him about the recall and that I thought he had the same problem with injector seals that in this case was letting oil back down the injector into the cylinder when stationary. He called his local Toyota dealership with his chassis number to be told there was no outstanding recalls on it, he then tried another dealer who told him it should be done asap and booked it in FOC next week!

Thanks Neil - it does sound the same sort of problem. On advice from Toyota Customer Services my LC4 was taken to the local dealer for the seal work; the dealer said it wanted £800 to strip down engine and find cause. I told Toyota to deliver it back to my garage at end of last week. Before it went to the dealer my mechanic managed to get engine running on all four cylinders but it was making knocking noise from middle of engine; he thinks it might be a bearing. But - I will pass on your findings to him and hopefully it won't be too major a job - but there again!!!! :dontgetit:

Toyota is inconsistent in its communication about this sort of thing as evidenced by your friend who was told there was no campaign outstanding but then another one had the details.

I will be interested to hear if and what the head of Toyota GB says. One of the posts from someone who appears to be in the PR department of Toyota commented about another campaign where Toyota got owner details from the DVLA.

It seems very disappointing when I read of the diabolical problems with holes in pistons within an engine that is supposed to be bomb proof.

These disturbing writings show that the common rail D4D engine is not bomb proof at all. We have a problem which seemed to be injectors and due to seeing crap in the filter when it was changed twice in a month I thought has a minute bit of that crap got past the filter and past the pump into 1 or even two injectors.

I took the 2002 land cruiser which had done 97k to our local reputable diesel specialists who said they had sent the injectors to be tested.

They said after 8 days one injector had hardly any fuel flow on idle and another was not 100%!  The injectors had been reinserted and it ran good when cold & then the fault occurred again when temp was approaching normal. Drove car till engine showed same fault as before towards home but £597 worse off.   As I passed Toyota Nottingham I thought bugger it I'll get a Toyota diagnostic. After about two hours of leaving the Diesel specialists I got a phobne call telling me two of the injectors in the engine were faulty still!  I said =well earlier this morning did I say , There is something not right here........ have the injectors been marked and put back in the bores they were in before?

Not a direct answer forthcoming.........    How on earth can any engineers be trusted to do what is correct? The whole episode is like an expensive mystery trip......... needless to say I said I'll continue with the arm and a leg diagnostic because what faults there are Toyota should state what they are. If one or more injectors are said to be faulty we'll be having a discussion on what rebate I'll be getting for the so called renovated injector!
