Fitting A Leather Gear Shift Gaiter

OK, so I bought a nice leather gear shift gaiter but, as you know, you only get the gaiter and not the plastic frame that the gaiter is attached to.

I’ve done some searches here and elsewhere and from what I’ve learned you have to de-staple the old gaiter in order to remove it. It sounds easy enough but I’m wondering if it really is just that simple. The staples seem quite substantial and the frame doesn’t seem all that strong. Can someone who has actually done the job describe how they went about removing the staples, and how easy is it to attach the new gaiter by reusing the old staples?
