Key Problem

Hi, I have a 2001 Avensis 1.8 VVTI GS. I have just noticed that the remote spare key is not working to open the car. The red light does not illuminate when I press them open or lock buttons. I have changed the Battery and the red light flickers on and off for maybe 50 times this then just stops and the key will not work. The red light still does not illuminate when I press either button. Is there anyone who knows a fix for this or does it mean getting a new key?

Hi this might not be much help but I will say it anyway

I have an 03 avensis wen I changed the Battery in the key I had to programme it into the car.
