Our Rav 4.3 2.2 has developed a rattling noise in 6th that sounds like a roller bearing giving up anyideas welcome as to what it could be!

Goes away when in 5th.

I can't remember a specific gearbox proplem on a 6 speed. If the cables are adjusted properly it could be surgery.

Managed to record it here. I'll take it into Toyota on Thursday and see if they can identify it.

That's weird, I thought if you rename the file from a .zip to .mp4 you should be able to play it through apples QuickTime player.

That sounds like a tooth off 6th gear to me. If you remove the N/S wheel and the side plastic cover, there is a big plug in the back of the box. If you take that out then look in I reckon you should see the pair of 6th gears as they are right at the back. Now if you turn the hub the gears should turn and you can carefully inspect all the teeth.

If one is broken you are looking for a second hand box.

Wee daft question......is the gearbox drain plug magnetised and would it have said tooth attached if it has indeed broken off.....? Would it be easier to drain gearbox than what you have suggested, Don min.....?

Anyidea how much a gear cluster is v getting a complete new box?

More than likely parts plus labour to fit would exceed price of a gearbox from breaker......?

Well I was wondering about tackling it myself with better weather now on the way. Reason I asked about a new cluster is I'd rather swap the internals for new than buy another box that's unknown condition.

Where's parts king when you need him :)

Right recorded this today it's the rattle I'm now getting when parked in idle, again change the file extension from .zip to mp4 to listen if you down load.

I think this is more like a bearing or synchro chattering due to bearing wear or misalignment, goes away when you put the clutch in.

Aye, the gears all rotate even in neutral. It's called "constant mesh". All the gears are in contact and rotate together but thety are free to turn on the shaft they sit on. When you select a gear you simply lock it to that shaft.

However, I do hope there is a simple explanation.

Well unfortunately there wasn't a simple answer, it's going in for major surgery on Wednesday. 6th gear exploded near Derby on Wednesday just gone, managed to get her home in 5th an now she's with a local gearbox specialist for a removal, recon and refit (all with Toyota bits) - if the box is salvageable. No idea on total cost yet but it aint gonna be cheap :(

My attitude is currently mechanical ****** happens. The cars now at 120k miles and if you think about it most are motorway miles so 70-80k of that will be on that 6th gear.

Just get another box GG, it will be cheaper.

There was a brand new one in the for sale section ages ago. He wanted £400 for it. Start looking from 2006 and later.

You could make an offer on this;
