Hi

Does your console look like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Avensis-MK1-97-03-center-console-trim-surround-with-air-blower-vents-026-/281055689504?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AAvensis&hash=item4170397b20

or this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Avensis-Wood-Effect-Centre-Console-Dashboard-Trim-1997-2000-/130848473898?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e772d432a

If so you will find that the whole unit will come away from the dash. The bottom needs to be eased away first. No wiring needs to be removed as you will be able to 'twist' it out of the way onto the top of the dash (wires are only at the top). The radioa/casette is then fully visible. a philips driver will remove the 4 bolt holding the unit in place.
