1985 Carina Ii - Can't Adjust Steering Column Height

Hi there, i have just "inherited" a 1985 Carina II GL auto, i am very puzzled by the height of the steering wheel, it just seems much too low, i am struggling to fit in the car! (not a fatty btw)

In the manual a diagram points to a release catch on the LHS of the steering column, a fairly obvious place for it to be!

The problem is, there is no catch on the steering column, i have searched thoroughly all around. I know this car is 28 years old, but surely there must be some means of lifting the steering wheel off my lap!

All the best
