Help! Celica 7A-Fe Idle Screw Part No Longer Available...

Hi all

While adjusting the idle speed on my wife's Celica I accidentally snapped the idle screw in half!!!

She doesn't know yet.

Luckily the good half still attached to the throttle body is the bit the throttle cable hinges back on and stops, but it is only a matter of time before it falls off.

I went to my local Toyota dealer who said the only option was to buy a whole new throttle Body for £817.56 and he couldn't actually guarantee it would come with the idle screw? The screw itself is not shown on the Toyota parts computer diagram and neither is it listed as an available part. In fact the Toyota guys didn't think it had an idle screw until I dragged the parts manager out to the car park and let him look under the hood.

The dealership kindly contacted Toyota GB technical support who verified that the idle screw did exist but as the car is now over 10-years old the screw is no longer available. This has to be the craziest thing I've ever heard. I can buy the throttle body from them and air filters and wheels and pretty much any other Celica 6 part from Toyota but not an essential engine screw! Mad.

Could anybody give me the part number of the screw or any alternative suggestion as a fix. If anybody has one I'll happily buy it from you.

Thanks

Christian

If it is the one I am thinking of, what about using an off the shelf set screw/machine screw and lock nut from the likes of Screwfix. You can get them in varying lengths and thicknesses.

Set Screws go down to about an M6:

e.g.

http://www.screwfix.com/p/set-screws-a2-stainless-steel-m6-x-60mm-pack-of-10/15955

and the machine screws are generally thinner:

e.g.

http://www.screwfix.com/p/pan-head-machine-screw-bzp-m5-x-50mm-pack-of-25/22093

Should be a standard metric thread, but I am not sure of the diameter required - is it an M6?

Received from Toyota GB ...

Dear Christian

Further to your email correspondence with Matthew Butler, it has been passed to me to reply on his behalf.

We have shown the photographs you provided to our Service Technical Department and by checking the illustration of the Throttle Body this part is not available separately from Toyota (GB) PLC and was only supplied with the Throttle body assembly as a complete unit.

The Service Technical Department has said that this is a generic 10mm bolt with an attached lock nut. They suggested that if you can remove the bolt from the housing then a local motor specialist may be able to supply the required part.

I hope that this information is of assistance, and regret that we have been unable to source the parts for you.

Yours sincerely,

Sophie Maynard

Very kind of Toyota to respond but there is no way the idle screw is 10mm or M10 bolt? They are right about the lock nut.

Thanks Gareth I will try to find the correct size screw/bolt and nut. I'll take the broken screw into my local ScrewFix and see if they can match it. Can't believe a part for a car made in 1998 is not available - unless I buy a £900 throttle body assembly. Toyota.com should read Toyota.CON
