Rav4 Fuel Pump Sensor

Hi

First posting - as I am a new member - so please forgive me if this topic has already been done.

To cut a long story short, my Toyota Rav 4 (2007 T180 D-4D) is sitting in the Toyota garage, whilst they scratch their heads trying to work out why all the warning lights come on saying there is a fuel leak - but they can't find one. Apparently, one possibility is that the temperature sensor in the fuel pump is faulty. I am informed, however, that you can not just replace the sensor, you have to replace the whole fuel pump at a cost of about £1,500 (plus VAT I expect). Could you please tell me if this is really true. I find it incredible that the sensor is not a separate component. Surely the sensor can be replaced without having to get a whole new fuel pump.

What is the fault code being read from the car? I suspect it is P0093 " Large fuel leak detected" if this is the case there is a technical service bulletin from Toyota about a faulty "suction control valve" causing this issue which requires a modified valve and new software to be installed. If this car is at a Toyota dealership tell them to look at bulletin EG-0044T-0310-EN.

Devon Aygo

Can you get these bulletins you keep quoting?

Thanks for all the posts.

In the end I decided to bite the bullet and let Toyota replace the fuel pump yesterday (before seeing your post Devon Aygo).

Looked at the paper work today, and yes it was "P0093 - fuel system leak".

Got 1 mile down the road today and 'beep', 'beep', 'beep', - limp mode, and warning lights.

Well that was a waste of £1,500 ..... :censor: !

As it is Good Friday, the service department is not open today. They are open tomorrow - and I'll be there!

I shall suggest they look at bulletin EG-0044T-0310-EN, and see what they come back with.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Hi

Well they've had a look - at the car and the bulletin. The new fuel pump would have sorted out the suction control valve, and they have now upgraded/reinstalled the software. Lights and limp mode still happening. Sounds like they are a bit puzzled by the whole thing. Anybody out there had a similar problem that may help us to diagnose the fault?

Cheers

i suggest this sensor is responsible for viscosity measurement of the diesel inside the pump (but not really sure)

i do not believe the whole pump must be changed.

Hi

Current state of play. Toyota (Milton Keynes) are working their way through various parts of the engine to try and sort this problem by a process of elimination. To give them their due, their customer service has been pretty good. Just hoping they can find the part that is causing the problem. They seem to work on it, and it is fine, but when the car is starting from cold it is the same old story of 'beep beep beep', warning lights, and limp mode. Again, I (we!) would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has come across a similar problem.

Hondas - I can't remember how I started this post - I am pretty sure there is a fairly obvious 'button' to press somewhere on the home page. I am sure one of the regular guys can give you all the details.

I have seen one instance of P0093 coming up as a fault code after the suction control valves had been modified ( on a Verso T180 ), in this case other than the fault code and the sudden loss of fuel pressure that set the code we could find no faults when all the diagnostic procedures had been followed. After speaking to Toyota technical & a local diesel specialist we removed the injectors and sent them to the diesel specialist who eventually located the issue, it was found that two of the injectors whilst supposed to be closed and not allowing any fuel through would randomly leak, the diesel specialist diagnosed an intermittent mechanical solenoid fault allowing a sudden fuel pressure loss which the car sets the P0093 "large fuel leak" fault code, the testing cost £60 at the specialist. As the fault was mechanical and not electrical the engine ECU did not detect a specific injector fault & none of the on car tests could ever detect this issue.

A new set of injectors where fitted and no further fault has occurred.

Hi all, i am new to this forum,

I have Toyota Rav4 d-cat 177hp the issue is that i have cold start issues if the temperature is under 0 C, i when to 3 deferent shops and i got 3 deferent explanations about the issue, the official Toyota service is telling me to change the fuel system rail, other mechanic is telling me that this is issue was origination from some overheating of the car and that some engine gasket need to be change but this is more complex fix, and the last one is telling me that the injectors are the issue but he can not tell witch one is problematic.

Just to know i did an oil change and all filters are changed before 500 miles and i also did a EGR valve removal at the same time, since before i was getting the same issue but the code was pointing ti the EGR valve.

Hi Devon, I’m wondering if this could be the same issue with a RAV4 t180 we have just bought. The car drives fine most of the time and only goes in to limp mode when the car is cold and slowing down, I.e dropping gear and making a turning, does this sound similar to the issue you had with the Verso?

Many thanks
