New Owner And A Couple Of Issues

Hi all,

I've had my 05 D4D corolla t3 for a month now and have a couple of oddities with it. Hopefully someone here has come across these before and can point me in the right direction.

When i'm cruising at motorway speeds or very lightly accelerating the car seems to come on boost then off in a regular cycle making the car feel like it's alternatively wanting to accelerate or is driving through treacle. Seems ok under wide open acceleration though.

Also the mpg display behaves oddly with for example a constant reading of 40mpg suddenly jumping to 80mpg for a brief period before returning to 40.

Are the two things linked or two separate issues?
