can anyone suggest possible causes, no apparent play anywhere, rear shocks and springs off eBay fitted, no difference. thanks for looking, waiting for help please.

Could it be a loose exhaust mounting?

If it's knocking over bumps the front strut bearings are possibly worn. These don't really affect the suspension or the general running of the vehicle, just a noise nusence.
