Hi all.

I have recently bought a 2004 rav 4 d4d 2.0. It seems a bit noisey in the back. I understand I will be getting a bit of road noise.

The noise does not change if I hold in the clutch.

I have changed the oil in the rear diff.

Any idea,s on what to check next would be appreciated.

Welcome to the club Martin

Flippant answer first - let the 'significant other' ride up front

More helpful suggestion - can you describe the noise?

Welcome to the club, Martin.

As you say that you've just bought the car then you may not know any history of the tyres. My 3-dr was tthe same after I bought it and once I fitted new tyres, the noise disappeared. It seems that the rears had developed flat spots that meant that they were out of round, which in turn set up all sourts of weird noises from the rear.

Check the tyre pressures first and then try swapping them front to back to see if there is any difference before you do anything else.

Good luck.

In response to the flippant answer, unfortunately the noise is just as bad when I am driving alone . It seems to be a whinning noise. Gets a little louder as you increase speed from start to about 30mph. Then stays about the same regardles of speed.

Thank you for the welcome and the reply. Another job for the weekend. Have it in getting the timing belt done at the moment.

I think I'd try Jim's suggestion first in that case Mark - no cost and will start to rule things out. Tyres can make all sorts of sounds. My winter tyres make a sort of whoooooing sound at speed.

Hub bearings do go from time to time and from what I can gather, the bearing isn't available from Toyota - you have to buy the whole hub assembly. I would try a bearing specialist and find somebody with a decent press.
