Injectors

I am posting this topic on RAV 4 site as I know there are a number of members with expertise on the issues of replacement engines due to carbon clogging etc.

I have a verso which has just had a replacement Optifit engine under the goodwill warranty.

However I still have some intermittent blue smoke issues which have been diagnosed by Toyota as being injectors, two of these are out of tolerance. I have been told that the cost of replacing these lies outside the terms of the goodwill warranty and I will be expected to pay for these myself. Four injectors will be expensive . Toyota have been excellent up to now , but I would have thought that the injectors would be part of the deal as they are part of the problem. Any comments would be much appreciated.

hi matey

what is an exact issue with injectors???

poor starting up?? engine vibration at an idle ??? smoky exhaust ???

normally in case you do have an issue with two of four then it is required to test all four cos another two will die soon.

do not ignore it cos your next head ache will be with EGR; turbo; power loss etc.

all four nozzles mus to give an equivalent diesel portion per cycle.

regards / Igor

I agree - surely the injectors are simply 'part of the package', and if there's a problem with these new items, then T. should replace.

Alternatively, if this goes nowhere, you could always hand them over to a good diesel injection specialist for checking and setting. Any fault with them will be identified (and sorted).

Dear Tech01 and Igormus, Thanks for your replies so quickly. The car has had everything checked out EGR ok, Turbo OK, it has the new Optifit engine but still occasionally puffs out blue smoke. Mr T has been excellent to this point and have diagnosed 2 injectors with reading above the tolerances given. Its just that I had noticed a number of owners in the same boat had the engine replaced including the injectors and don't know if this aspect is or is not included in the goodwill warranty.

The question is really were the injectors in tolerance prior to the engine change? Given the number of checks that have to be done prior to engine removal, they should have spotted that, and therefore the injectors would/should have been replaced/recalibrated as part of the engine replacement.

As far as I am aware the injectors are not part of the goodwill / engine change / package or whatever you want to call it

Things have definitely tightened up on this warranty campaign. My understanding is that if any associated parts are found at the time of changing the engine would be changed inside the scope of the work as long as they could be linked to the original problem. If they are considered to be normal wear and tear they will be charged to the customer which on a car up to 7 year old is probably reasonable. If the car were low mileage and had a full service history OR was of the newer end (of which I know of one 2009 model with an as of yet undisclosed reason for failure) then TGB may take a sympathetic view.

As in most cases - a test of "reasonableness" will apply.

Thanks for all the input on my problem with the injectors. It would seem that they probably lie outside the scope of the ' goowill warranty ', my initial thoughts were that the clogging issues would have done some damage to the injectors and were therfore part of the initial problem and therefore would be changed at the time of the engine replacement. However I suppose Toyota need to draw a line somewhere. Anyway one way or another it will get sorted. Again many thanks for all the comments input. I don't think many other manufacturers would have gone this far. Mr T has been pretty good in all this.

I think Toyota do a modified injector ? Think it's got 2 dot/lines on top of it the old 1s have 1 ! I had a tick noice on my old rav 4 ! 2 was out of speck ! All 4 was changed under warranty as it was only 2 year old 15000 miles !

Just an update on the issues i have had with intermittent blue smoke, which only occurs accasionally, and only at start up after a run of say 20 miles or more when the car is left and then re-started. I have spoken with a number of diesel injection specialists since Toyota identified a possible problem with perhaps 2 injectors. The consensus seems to be that it is unlikeley to be an injector problem if the car runs OK and doesn't blow smoke out on acceleration or load etc.! My own thinking is turning towards the air sensor or similar as on restarting the revs are low , even when its cold, and noticeably when I turn the temperature up in the car the revs move from 750/800 to 1200 ish, a bit weird this. It is almost overfuelling at start up and not correctly the fuel being supplied , the smoke being unburnt diesel out of the exhaust.

Any thoughts appreciated.

smoky exhaust is always violation of ratio between an air and diesel injected.

but once again i repeat the car driver must think what could influence on this ratio --- there are so many other reasons giving the same outcome. regards / Igor

The revs are increasing to counteract the increase in heater motor speed / current draw I have read on here on more than one occasion.......?

Afraid I cant add anything on the injectors..but the change in revs with the heater on or off is normal I think.
I only know this because I purposely turn mine off to keep the revs down until the engine warms up.
One of our more knowledgeable members might know why this happens?

  • 2 weeks later...

A final post , more to thank the people who contribute to this excellent website . My problems seem resolved ! An injection specialist found no problem with the injectors but recommended a dose of STP injector cleaner along with better quality fuel at least for a period of time. The improvements also coincided with the warmer weather, but the car now seems fine runs quiet and really zippy. Alas its the end of buying diesel cars for me. Have my own thoughts on Toyota servicing procedures though. Thanks again.Great website.
